Root ROOT all htc devices!!!!!!! Will this work for us

it may or may not. Whats the point though? All HTC devices can be unlocked and rooted quicker than you can download a script and run it.

confirm. works like a charm. and for the record much quicker than using the original method. just used it on my wifes evo

But root is only the beginning. You won't have true freedom until you get s-off and downgrade the bootloader.
Very true. But honestly I am a little intimidated by the whole S-off thing. I am always seeing posts of people messing up with it. One of these days Ill get the confidence to do it.

It's not as bad as you think. Alot of people start and get scared and quit on it. I was one of those people once. But I said to heck with it and did it non-stop for 20 minutes and finally got the timing down. Don't be afraid of it.

Besides if you get stuck, we are here and so are the folks at unlimted.io

it says you must be s-off first

I dont think it does...two options. Poor english but I take it to mean there are two options; one needs s-off and the other doesnt?

Two root methods are included in the tool: universal exploit or flashing an insecure boot.img file. Universal exploit method works for all HTC devices running stock ROMs that haven’t had their exploit patched yet, while the latter method requires devices to be S-OFF, have ro.secure property set to 0 and not use a patched ADBD binary. The former method of using universal exploit is obviously a much simpler option as it doesn’t require you to go into unnecessary complexities.

I too dont see the advantage over risk of doing s-off. The success of radio updates using s-off are vague at best. Im staying s-on but I also use 4EXT. Im running midnight and mobster roms with zero issues.

if we used this we could have avoided htc unlock website correct ? so they wouldn't know we rooted our phones.

Just because you downloaded the unlock token doesn't prove that you actually rooted your phone. And in all the months that htcdev has been around I've yet to see one post where this has been an issue with HTC.

I don't know what you mean by vague at best.

S-off is very much worth it.
1. Fix radio interface error (if you have it)
2. Downgrade hboot
3. Better service with different radio
4. Use aosp (cm9, cm10, AOKP) roms
5. Flash kernels with a normal flash without having to resort to hacky stuff like 4EXT's smart flash or whatever it's called
6. Use gingerbread roms

Really I don't see why you wouldn't go s-off.

I totally agree, personally I believe that root without having s-off on any HTC phone is half assed and foolish. Compared to other phones doing the wire trick is actually easier than trying to make a working Gold Card. Also this just gives you root, you still have to go to htcdev to unlock your bootloader. I just tried this on my spare phone and got an error that the exploit failed.

Why so? I have root but remain S-ON. I can:

Use any of the popular roms
Use Titanium pro
Use Wifi Tether
Use any 'root only' app

What are the disadvantages of S-On only, and why 'foolish' ? I dont seem to need a radio update as I have had the phone 2 weeks and not one connection issue. If it ain't broke dont fix it. Many of the radio hacks are full of 'didnt work for me' comments. Its called the placebo effect.

I say its more foolish to jump in and go S-Off just because everybody else is doing it not really understand why Im doing it in the first place...

Who can tell me why I would want to go s-off other than updating the radio that I dont need to do?

I have zero interest in trying a gingerbread rom - thats why Im dumping the Triumph and the other CM9-CM10 roms are half-baked betas with missing functionality - why would I want that?

Im very happy with the midnight/mobster roms, 4EXT and S-On :)

BTW - the 4EXT SmarFlash isnt 'hacky', its seamless and easy. Doing the 'wire trick' constitutes 'hacky' in my book :)

More people have had boot loops and other issues while trying to flash kernels using 4EXT smart flash, I personally use it for my recovery but using it to install kernels is a hack. The wire trick is just taking a pull down resistor low. Much simpler than trying to build a Gold Card like most other HTC phones require. No hack involved, plus having s-off opens up the whole world of 3d roms which are hosted on other forums not just the ones available here. I have never really had a radio issue either but unlike the Triumph, HTC phones are not fully unlocked without having s-off. The hardest part is already accomplished by unlocking your bootloader, I personally don't see why anyone wouldn't complete the process to allow you to have full freedom to install anything that they desire. But to each their own I suppose. And the Triumph had FroYo, Gingerbread had missing functionality, no HDMI out.

Thats true. I never really missed it but it was missing.

As you say, to each his own. No doubt if I start getting the connection errors I will be eating humble pie :)

I'm rooted but S-ON. I just rooted to remove that stupid persistent GPS crosshair thingy, and do some de-bloating. Other than that, I'm fine with stock until CM10 is better. I'm not convinced replacing all the radio stuff is the miracle cure that people are making it out to be, either.

It's not a miracle cure, it is simply replacing a rushed, poorly written file with one that works. There is no placebo effect involved when your phone no longer receives the error message or signal fluctuations that drop to - 120 db. The problem doesn't exist any longer. This has been born out by numerous people both on this as well as other forums having the exact same experience. I have reverted back to the stock radio, had the same problem re occur. Reflashed the new radio problem disappeared once again. No guessing involved but simple empirical evidence that it is a confirmed solution to an obviously prevalent issue.

It may not seem hacky to you or any other user because all you see is the user interface, but the code used to power smart flash is VERY hacky indeed.

Htc really doesn't want us to flash custom kernels for some reason, if we wanted some Apple locked down crap we would have bought an iPhone...

They are trying to prevent you from changing anything that could brick the device.

Trying to cut down on replacement costs

Exactly - these kinds of forums are full of people who believe they know what they are doing because they run a root script that somebody else created or follow a tutorial that somebody else researched and created.

There are very few who actually know what they are doing and are just not regurgitating other peoples work as if they somehow had a hand in it.

How so? I research and write code for a living - please explain. Im sure I will be able to follow.
