Root ROOT all htc devices!!!!!!! Will this work for us

Exactly - these kinds of forums are full of people who believe they know what they are doing because they run a root script that somebody else created or follow a tutorial that somebody else researched and created.

There are very few who actually know what they are doing and are just not regurgitating other peoples work as if they somehow had a hand in it.

Not everyone needs to know the ins and outs of how to write the code to root the device and flash ROMs

But everyone needs to do their due diligence and know what they are putting on their phone and why they are doing it each time they flash something. Because the guide said so isn't the correct answer

Forums like this help to fill that void in knowledge.

While I haven't look at 4EXT's source, (I'm not even sure if it is open source), It is basically a variation of HTC DUMLOCK it involves backing up your recovery and restoring it to the boot partition to get past HTC's security. Then after the kernel flash it restores the recovery to it's original position.

This adds two times the wear on the boot partition for every kernel flash and as is mentioned on the page I linked too, it is possible that if something doesn't quite work right it can run twice, meaning that it will be impossible to restore your boot partition without a computer. Also if a kernel doesn't flash right, or you flash the wrong file you need a computer to fix.

I personally don't like that kind of hackery stuff going on with something as important as my boot partition. Plus if you are a frequent kernel flasher, the extra wear could eventually cause the the boot partition to fail twice as fast as if you were s-off.

Again, I'm not sure if this is the exact method 4EXT uses but the basic stuff that is happening is the same.

Getting back to the OP, I tried the exploit on a fresh out of the box Virgin branded phone and received an epic fail. No joy using this method with this phone. And as koopakid08 related, if you truly wish to stay s-on be smart and use fastboot to flash kernels.

I'm sure if there was a video to get s-off on the Evo V, not a video of an Evo3D (although the same phone) more people would try it. It may be a tough request, but downloading, performing, and displaying the results realtime is one way many of us scared folk will do it.

It's not a miracle cure, it is simply replacing a rushed, poorly written file with one that works. There is no placebo effect involved when your phone no longer receives the error message or signal fluctuations that drop to - 120 db. The problem doesn't exist any longer. This has been born out by numerous people both on this as well as other forums having the exact same experience. I have reverted back to the stock radio, had the same problem re occur. Reflashed the new radio problem disappeared once again. No guessing involved but simple empirical evidence that it is a confirmed solution to an obviously prevalent issue.

I'm not really comfortable with your use of the word "empirical." I've read the threads too, there's a few who say it's amazing and a few who say it didn't do much (and a LOT of confusion over QPST). Until somebody has two Evos next to each other identical in every way save for one having the radio mods and compares them for at least a few weeks, no one can claim no placebo effect, no outside factors, and that it's empirical.

I'm not saying it doesn't work, mind. I'm sure it worked for you. It may work for me. I'm saying that for some people, the stock stuff is working fine, and claiming that it doesn't make sense to stay S-ON because of all the glorious things you can do to your phone if it's S-OFF is overzealous. If it ain't broke, why fix it, ya know?

Can you use this way of rooting to kinda start with and then do the other stuff to turn the S radio thing to whatever to stop the errors ? I really know nothing about this but people are saying that rooting will help with fluctuating signal and the radio interference error. I'm not sure that I have the knowledge to boot the other way with moving files around and all that stuff. I'm convinced that I'm going to screw up my phone.
Even if I could just root to get rid of the bloatware crap...would doing it this way let me do that?

Edit: ok well after reading more I'm not gonna mess with the s thing. I'd just like the midnight rom thing with Google now and be able to remove pointless apps.

I also would like the midnight rom. It sounds cool. Can I get that after rooting this way? I have no idea what kernels are. Ha.
