Root Root desire

Hi, i have just recent bought a desire.. and now i want to root it! :)
The only issue is, i don't know where to start...

So, what do i need when i am goin to root?? Have searched a little bit on the forum, but felt it safer to post a new thread.

And does unrevoked 3.21 work with hboot 0.93.0001?
And with the newest firmware 2.2?
Also, do i need to use a "goldcard"?

Yeah, I read them... aren't they outdated? now that the new unrevoked 3.21 is out?
I don't want to root if i have to downgrade and shit like that :P

the reason for downgrading was the previous version of unrevoked couldn't do Froyo. Now it can.
 
Unrevoked 3.21 is very new and lots of people have had problems. It's actually riskier than doing a proper downgrade and using 3.14.
 
So u say i should wait? cuz i really don't want to downgrade :P
And one more thing... can someone of you guys write down what i have to/should do before I root? Like backup or something, and if u have a link to the site i can find it. i would be happy! :)

Ah thanks. I wasn't aware of that.

Personally I did all my rooting the old fashioned way. I prefer it but it's a hard recommendation to make ;)
 
doesn't it? I want to get full accsess to my phone, and i have to move all my apps to the sd.. :S

I want to install different roms, But i guess i really don't know exactly what a rom is... have a little clue..
But if someone could say what todo before rooting so im "safe" i would be pleased.. =)

But why should people care to make another unrevoked if it doesn't matter if u downgrade or not? :S that doesn't make sense..
 
Rooting won't allow you to use A2SD+. You'd need to install a new ROM, even if it's almost identical to froyo.

The old rooting method doesn't work on any new phones, so that's out.
Unrevoked 3.14 works perfectly, but requires Android 2.1.
Unrevoked 3.21 only came out last week and although it works fine for a lot of people, has some big issues.

It doesn't matter, as long as you do it properly.
Yes you need a new rom for A2SD+.
Hboot isn't relevant, but your froyo ROM can't be rooted by 3.14.
 
I don't think I've ever seen a rooting guide that's completely accurate...

You do a backup in recovery after you've rooted. You need to have custom recovery before you can backup.

Your example is related to the OLD method of rooting before Unrevoked. You needed different files and different methods of rooting which used to be determined by Hboot version.


This is no longer the case due to unrevoked.m It is a completely different method.

That's the standard old method - it flashes an old engineering RUU release that has a recovery that will allow you to install updates that aren't signed by HTC (stock doesn't allow this), and once you have that, rooting is no effort at all. Since it flashes an old RUU, it won't work on any new phones and will break SLCD phones (regardless of hboot).

Unrevoked3 works by getting past the phone's security and reflashing recovery, and also adds root permissions to your existing ROM. It's by far the best method.

If you have froyo (which you do) - unrevoked 3.21 or downgrade.
For Android 2.1 - unrevoked 3.14.

The recovery that unrevoked installs includes the backup software.

You can't do nandroid backup before flashing custom recovery, and can't do titanium without a rooted rom, so it doesn't apply in this case.
