Root Root Explorer Question

Morning~
I was having some issues with my rooted Nook Color, so I decided to go back to stock 1.3 and start over.
I had my old SD card to root above version, so I re-rooted 1.3. I also blocked OTA with root explorer (changing auto to manual).
Well, I THEN decided to again go back to stock, because I was having issues with sideloading. I tried to update to 1.4.3 and it seems I can't get there.
Question: after root is broken, does the OTA block still remain in place?
I downloaded the 1.4.3 to my desktop and tried to load onto NC, but the device does not seem to recognize the update.
Why can't I stop playing with this fricking thing??!!:banghead:

Root and OTA are two independent things. It takes root to disable OTA, but you can remove root and still have OTA disabled.

If you return to stock (format data, flash something new), then your OTA is gone because you've returned to stock.

How were you trying to update to 1.4.3, by flashing it or relying on the OTA update?

What kind of "issues" were you having and what happened when you tried to update?

Hey~

Okay...so I'm back at 1.2, after the 8 failed reboots.
I had to do it. I couldn't get some apps to load (Not compatible with your device).
I then, could not get B & N 1.4.3 to be loaded. Did this the B & N way (save to desktop/drag to root of NC). Nothing. I thought my OTA was still on the NC.

The ONLY reason I wanted to go back to 1.4.3, is because I could not get NC to connect to the internet, after re-rooting (no CM7, only CWM & Nooters) and kept getting an "error" notation next to WiFi setting on NC.
I am not adverse to trying CM7 again. I just kept losing icons (sorry, Noob! and having trouble trying to figure out dual boot. I really am smart, but all the terminology gets to me! I can follow, step by step directions, but not knowing exactly what each file/program does-frustrates me. Am I making any sense?

Now, another question. Are the files for software you download from non B & N sites the same as the ones you get from the B & N website? I noticed the sizes are slightly different. Can they be loaded onto NC in the same way...save to desktop and drag into root?

Thanks so much, yet again. I know reading some of these posts must make you shake your head...but be proud! You have helped me come a long way in "how to" do things on the Nook. Now, if I could only understand the inner-workings!!

I have little experience with B&N stock roms and am not a reader. If I want to read I'll use my laptop.

I tried the 8 failed boots a couple times and never got it to work, so you have beat me in that dept.

Dual boot is only needed if you want to keep your NC stock b/c you want to preserve B&N's reader. O/W you can use any reader if you've rooted the stock rom or replaced it with CM7. My preference is to replace the stock reader with CM7 since I find that to be a LOT more reliable than a sdcard install.

My understanding is the 1.4.3 update is supposed to happen when your NC is idle. If you experience unexpected reboots, that could be it trying to install. Did you open the zip file with an app to make sure it's not an incomplete download?

So, is wi-fi working now?

Regarding "files for software you download", where are you seeing these files? Most of us just install apps from Google's market or B&N's market. Apps you purchase in B&N's market would need to be purchased again from Google's market since they are not transferable. In theory, you could back them up with Titanium Backup and restore them in the other rom, but I doubt you'd be able to update them past that point. If they are a different size, yet the same version, I suspect there might be code in them that ties it to a certain market (Google vs B&N's).

You should be able to flash the update from a bootable sdcard. If you don't wipe data, it should be treated as an update and you shouldn't lose your apps/settings. When coming from a different rom (ie. CM7, etc), then you do need to wipe data or bad things (boot looping, apps force-closing) happen.
