Root Root/Flash Quite impossible

Hey guys,

So i've searched for a couple of days have followed these instructions to the "t":
http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/427344-how-root-2-3-4-downgrade-get-s-off.html

I've had no luck with that link. Everytime I run that i get a "failed to flash recovery image"

I have an HTC Incredible on 2.3.4. Never been rooted. I actually took it to a metropcs and had them "flash" it and was activated on metropcs. Of course, I started messing with it and wanted to get rooted. Had no luck with this, so i decided to restore to factory settings, now i have no service on the phone and not sure how to get back on the service or even get rooted.

any help would be very appreciated. I've hesitated to post a question. I've been searching both this forum, xda developers, and of course google with no luck.

thanks in advance.

At what step do you get the failed to flash recovey? Do you have superuser in the app drawer?

the phone reboots a couple of times and then and it looks like it's towards the end of the process where it just says that error... phone restarts one last time, and then it starts... no superuser in the app drawer at all. and when i do the battery vol/power, it says "LOCKED" on top.

You attempted the htc dev unlock too... You need to finish that process first to unlock the bootloader before you can do anything with that thread or unrevoked.... Your bootloader needs to say unlocked at the top .

Basically you need to finish the instructions at htcdev.com/bootloader

Once you get your bootloader to say unlocked, then you follow these instructions:
http://androidforums.com/incredible...egain-root-s-off-htc-unlocked-bootloader.html

That will put you at the point where this user started:
http://androidforums.com/incredible...mpting-gain-root-htc-unlocked-bootloader.html

And just to confirm you have htc droid incredible 1 ?? Not the incredible s or incredible 2

I actually did the htcdev.com/bootloader first... and that looked as if it worked, but it kept sayin "locked" not sure if i missed a step on the htc's site guide. it looked pretty straight forward, install drivers, plug it in, and run the RUU. Once that was done it went through the process, said it was "done" and "successfull" but like i said it still said "locked". maybe i'll create a video of my screen and post it here to see if there is antyhing that i'm missing.

thank you

After you run the file on your phone, there are adb commands that you need to type in to get a code, then you type in more commands to unlock the bootloader. If I remember correctly, it's about 12 steps.

The file you loaded just gives you a unlockable/relockable bootloader. There are commands after that to actually unlock it.

Taken with an iPad, I know!

you can still run zerg rush(and prolly the htc supertool) to get temp root and downgrade without having to mess with htcdev.

if you want to go the htcdev route, did you get your unlock token in your email? you need to put it into the folder with adb and fastboot, and enter the command to flash it. at this point, you should see a disclaimer and an option to unlock the bootloader on your phone screen. select unlock, and your phone will reboot, doing a factory reset in the process.

might check out this thread: http://androidforums.com/incredible...mpting-gain-root-htc-unlocked-bootloader.html

kamkat is in the process of using htcdev to root and downgrade,so the thread should have some good info for you :)

I can't thank you guys enough for this. I am now rooted. I still have no metro pcs service though. I had the service on this device before I did the factory reset. Does anyone have any idea how I can go about doing this? I had metro service on the stock rom before. Trying to accomplish that once again. I've tried to follow a tutorial I found. But that tutorial assumes you have call/text working. I can't call not text from the phone.

Again thank you guys tremendously. I had not finished the boot loader process on htcdev.

sorry,no idea on that. im not sure what could have happened to disrupt the service. you may need to dial a programming number for metro pcs,or take the phone back to whomever programmed it for you in the first place.
