Hi. i'm new to the whole rooting process on phones but I hear it is great and i would like to try it out. I have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus and want to put Kit Kat on it. I have the jist of this I am just looking for step by step instructions that wont destroy my phone. It's a bummer that Google wont just push the update to the Galaxy Nexus but hey I'm on verizon anyway so i doubt i would've gotten it

You should find what you need in our (Verizon) Galaxy Nexus - All Things Root - Android Forums.

I'm not sure which specific thread would be appropriate, but installing a custom ROM like a Kit Kat build is pretty straight-forward on Nexus devices:

- unlock bootloader
- install (flash) or soft-boot a custom recovery (CWM, TWRP, etc.)
- make/take a Nandroid backup
- do the appropriate wipes, etc. inside custom recovery
- flash the ROM of your choice
- enjoy!

You might also find that Wugfresh's or MSkip's root tools will also already have the 4.4 ROM for VZW available for them.

Cheers and happy rooting!
