Root Root Guide

Hello. I'm new to the Thunderbolt and its my first smartphone. Before a few days ago "rooting" was something you did to a potted plant. I'm trying to get smarter on this and was wondering if any of you could recommend some reading on what rooting is, what it is good for, what does the phone look like after a "root", what ROM to use(I assume you can choose), and anything else the enlightened people of this forum can help with. Thanks so much for your help. :)

Here is an excellent post that has a lot of info regarding the root process, roms, kernels, etc. [REF] Thunderbolt Rules | Guides | Stickies | Recovery | Roms | Read Before Posting - xda-developers

As far as what rooting does, it basically unlocks access to the entire file system of the phone. This is what allows you to change roms, kernels, etc. What rom to use is all personal preference...I won't suggest one over the other. Most roms now are sense based (based on the stock image of the Tbolt) so they are all pretty similar.

There is a lot of info to be had. I would suggest do a lot of googling, searching forums and reading before diving in.

Good luck and enjoy!
