Root Root has landed

I was just under the impression that all of the fun stuff we are able to do with the D1 is completely locked out on the D2... sounds like this might be slowly changing though... good news!

Plus, you see all the threads about people trying to find the D1... especially now that they are becoming more and more difficult to find. It kind of reminds me of the original PS3 Sony released for $700... the one that is also capable of playing PS1 & PS2 games before Sony decided to lower the production costs. People were going nuts trying to find those once it got discontinued.

Rooted... pretty simple!

I found it VERY helpful to highlight/print selection for Post #164 of that thread. That way, I could check off the steps as I completed them.

I think the most time consuming part was finding the Droid2Root.rar file... finally realized that it was attached at the BOTTOM of the OP... duh!
 
any possibility of irreversibly bricking the phone via root process if anything gets screwed up? I have rooted my d1 before, just wanted to make sure.

Since there is a D2 SBF available, it seems unlikely you'd be able to do something that you could not reverse...just read/understand/ask questions before jumping in, rooting is a bit different w/the D2 than it was w/the D1.
 
I could use a hand. I rooted my droid 2 and installed bootstrap. Well I can not update to 2.2.20 or use the sbf because it is 2.2.20. I have done the removal of the app and udes root explorer to remove hijack, remove logwrapper, and rename lowrapper.bin to logwrapper. I updated my drivers, I have sbf 4.7+patch. And it fails every time with the sbf.

If you don't get help here, you might try the cm droid chat on freenode, channel #koush. There are a few D2 owners who've rooted who hang out there.

Hey guys and gals!!

Great site. i have been living here ever since i joined the Droid world early this week. (DROID 2).

I just went thru the ROOT process and didnt recieve any errors and it all (SEEMED) to have worked like a champ. Phone is alive and kickin on all cylinders, but my question is, did it really work?

is there a way to tell w/o installing anything or removing anything that the ROOT process really did take?

Try downloading an app that requires root (titanium backup is one) and see if it gets root permission when you launch it.
 
after poking around some more i found a new app installed called "SUPERUSER PERMISSION"

At the moment its empty, i think because i havent tried to do anything else. but so far it looks promissing.

no surprise that it failed to install. You have an earlier version of superuser that cant be updated through the market. Try downloading terminal emulator(The one by the dev jack palevich) open it up you will see a $ on the right.Type su then press enter. You should get a popup saying allow or deny. Hit allow and then the $ in terminal emulator will change to a #. If that all happens you are rooted.

after SUPERUSER asks for permission i get the # :) i guess im rooted. i will try to install titanium again.

BINGO titanium works now :)

i ran thru the ROOT process again, i might have missed something 1st go around. Thanks again!!
 
The reason why superuser can't be updated from the market is because it's installed in /system/app. Do this in Android Terminal Emulator:

Code: 
$ su
# mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
# rm /system/app/Superuser.apk
# pm uninstall com.noshufou.android.su
# mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
# sync
Then you can download superuser from the android market.

Really, I was the first to thank you after 1,000+ views and this long? Weird.

I am going to try this, even if it doesn't work perfectly, it will still open up the power of the phone. (I can always go back to factory too I suppose, although I'm honestly not thrilled about the phone all in all).

Does anyone know how to overclock the D2... I know it will CRUSH battery, but I'm just curious, and I am going to buy an extended battery anyway for vacation soon.
 
Well, I saw Droid 2 root on xda before I saw it here. Anyways, it can't be overclocked yet. We would need a custom kernel which I guess we can't get with the locked bootloader. I'm not all too familiar with that mumbo jumbo but I think that's the just of it. We can, however, underclock it which would be a huge battery life booster.

Ah, I hear ya... I don't care about over-clocking it anymore, just looking for a good solid bug free ROM :)
 
The official SW has bugs! :) SW by definition always has bugs, just the amount and severity vary. Just gotta choose which combination of features/bugs you like best. :D
 
I did root and there is a clockwork recovery available. Check out XDA for further instructions.. Pretty Simple. I'm actually running a ROM suggested to me from another dev. that is bloat freeeee :)

Post some pictures, please. How is the battery life, functionality, bugs, speed, etc.?
