As a operating-system/compiler developer for the past 27 years, I'd like to add just a little caution to rooting your phone.

Often the vendor doesn't provide certain features because they are buggy; hasn't been tested so we don't know if it is buggy; it might interact poorly with some other functionality; or because the vendor doesn't want to provide that feature for the moment. You really don't know why.

Rooting your phone and installing 3rd party privileged applications does come with some risk. Not quite as risky as starting to turn on random keys in your Windows registry, but you need to be careful. I remember back when I was a kid and we got our first color TV set, it had LOTS of knobs on the back to adjust color, hue, skin tones, etc. My Dad (thinking he could improve on the picture) started turning the knobs without keeping track of what he was doing. I spent several formative years of my life watching green-tinted-skin people on TV.

Will I root the phone? Not at first and perhaps never. If the Incredible does all that I want/need, then I'll just leave it alone. I really don't care if I can ever telnet to the shell on my phone.

This is great im coming from a moto droid (ugh) its great to know future incredible owners already have a root community :)

Rooting is not for everyone.
Some do and some dont, matter of personal preference.
And yes like with all ROM's and Mods and Tweaks done over the years, Warnings will be posted.
Thanks for sharing your opinion, but this is not a Pro's/Con's thread.....Just for Root Status and what not...

Cheers!

Having rooted an eris i can say first hand that its not that dangerous and bad things will most likely not happen. You won't have to live with bugs for the rest of your phones life, you can always roll back to stock. If your dad had a way to make a few clicks and get back to where he started from i don't think you would have been watching green tinted anything. Technology has advanced thankfully and most of the time things can be undone fairly easily. Sure you might loose some stored settings and have to redo them but thats the worst that will happen. With rooting you have nothing to lose and everything to gain, of course if you brick your phone then you are sol. But if you wait until others use the method of rooting successfully and then go forward with it you have very little chance of messing anything up.

I was just commenting on all the newbies saying "Hey, what is rooting? Gee that sounds cool, I think I'll try it." My 2cents.

I plan on waiting for the custom roms before I consider rooting. I mean unlocking wifi tethering and LED flash control is nice, but not totally worth it for me. However, once a clean 2.1 rom without sense is available I will consider rooting to compare. I appreciate all the work MoDaCo and co. do to unlock the potential of our phones. I am a little sad that HTC decided to keep locking down their phones after the N1, but its understandable since the N1 is a dev phone whereas the Inc/Desire are for the general public and you don't want the average user bricking their phone. In any case, keep up the good work rooting these phones, and remember, the Incredible is way way way way more important than those other phones :D (way)

So the current root will allow modifying the iptables for wifi tether? Might it also allow setcpu for underclocking to save battery? For me those are the only reasons to root that I can think of. Custom roms would be cool but not a deal breaker. After hearing the desire root issues I figured the Inc would have the same troubles but still opted for it over the n1 with the unlocked bootloader.

I'm excited for the community that is going to come with this phone. Being a HTC phone means XDA will be joining in so a lot of skilled people are going to be working on this beast. I can't wait to see the cooked ROM's that come out.

I have an eris but couldnt root because i installed a rom (2.1v1 & 2) that couldnt go back. this time i am waiting on root! (unless 2.2 comes out...)
i didnt check all the rooms available for the eris because i dont want to tease myself with something i cannot have :(
this time, im going to practice patience and hope for the best! :D

I am getting the Incredible as soon as my contract is up (three longgggg months....unless I crack and just get it early LOL) and have been a WM user for many years, currently on the Omnia i910.

I am following the thread over @ XDA as well, and wish you guys the best. I don't know anything about Android so I have nothing to offer in the way of helping (yet), but I am eager to learn and will try to contribute and/or help all that I can!! :D

This is turning into a WinMo A.A recovery group here ;)

Great to see all my old people around!

Glad to be remembered (at least I hope it is for good things LOL)!! I do remember some names )or variations I was wondering about) I am an active member of a lot of groups...PPCGeeks, Modaco, XDA and a bunch of new Android ones.

I have used Evidence's 6.5.3(?) ROM with Titanium and I think I have WM about as good as it gets for now, and as I mentioned before WM7 really isn't doing anything for me. With the specs on the Incredible I figured I would take a hiatus from WM (maybe for good) and check out what seems to be a fun, growing OS!!!

I look forward to contributing and learning!! (probably have the Incredible a couple months before + am due...what is $50 anyway LOL)

Yeah, leaving WM myself... lol! Just not that interested in it. Welcome syrguy1969. Good to see some familiar faces around here.

androids the shit...hope this rooting thing goes all well just returned my droid to get the incredible...was running Adamz's smoked glass 6.0.1 oc'd at 1.1ghz. I want to see what this phone can do when it gets rooted

I can't wait, i should have my phone by thursday and it looks like rooting it will be the first thing i do. I just hope amons recovery mode can be installed easily.

Hoping to see nexus one 3d image gallery, N1 weather widget, and free wifi tethering. I seen Nexus one with cyan mod with 360 rotation view. Good idea for this phone.
