Root Root is out!!!!!

I was just surprised that a rooted ROM didn't include the SuperUser app. But it turns out you don't need it since it just gives root permissions to whatever requests it.

So after the phone reboots I get to here and here....I am done. Phone is rooted, just no su app, which I don't need. I can still do all root stuff.

I'm going to assume that you are asking a question.

Yea you're done. Go ahead and use ConnectBot or w/e to get a commandline, then try running the su command and see if you get a # prompt

Sounds like there are a fair amount of kinks to work out. Thanks to everyone that is being a guinea pig and discovering these things. Since I'm brand new to Android, I'll let you guys get it ironed out before root.

I'm still a little confused about:

When you root, do you lose your apps? I'm coming from a jailbroken iPhone. Everytime I updated the OS I would lose all of my Cydia (jailbroken) apps. It's really annoying.

yes all apps lost since you have to wipe.

Just by rooting, you will not lose anything. Only if you decide to flash another ROM will you be starting over from scratch.

I guess what I'm asking is not will I lose apps the first time I root, I'm not really worried about that. What I want to know is will I lose apps when I upgrade to a rooted Android OS 3.0 or whatever in the future.

I don't mind losing everything the first time, but I would hate to lose everything everytime.

so lemme get this str8, if i root my evo 2morrow, and run a "unlocked" shipped rom, what can i do to it?

can i uninstall the sprint apps i dont use?
run non-purchased but downloaded apps?

what the point of this if im not flashing a froyo rom?

Ooops, seems to be misinformation on my part. If I remember correctly, with Toast's instructions, when you root your phone (not even flash custom ROM yet), you WILL lose all your apps. Sorry for the confusion.

Since you would have to flash any upgrades as a custom ROM to keep your root, yes, you will lose all your apps. Wouldn't having appbrain make it easy to reinstall all your apps, though?

Sure, I just wish somebody would come up with software that would back up all of your apps and settings, and then reinstall them after the upgrade is complete.

Do people who don't root also lose everything when they upgrade the OS?

No, you don't lose everything when you upgrade from an unrooted OS to the new version of an unrooted OS.

There are backupp apps that should restore everything just as you left it, but they tend to be unreliable.

This is really cool, but I'll wait for a more stable Froyo release before rooting. I'd like to be able to use the camera.

AppBrain is a pain in the butt. It basically automates searching for all your apps on the Market, but you have to click Install, OK, Install, OK, Install, OK, for every app.

Pingpongboss, simple question. I noticed your sense was blue and the buttons were blue. Was that a setting in the stock release? I have a hero right now and had not seen anything for changing the color of the sense UI.

i put the file in the root of my sd card that was freshly formatted and ran bootloader but it kept saying the files aren't the right ones. i tried this all day. is anyone else having issues? what is the best way to put it on the card or does it matter? i tried transferring it by usb from the computer to the card but maybe if i put it directly into the card reader on my computer and transfer it that way? I'm stumped.

Make sure the name is right. Toast initially uploaded the ZIP with a wrong name. Check the tutorial again. Also, it wouldn't recognize my ZIP on a 16gb microsdcard, but as soon as I tried to use a 8gb, it worked.

I didn't use adb to transfer the ZIP, I plugged my Evo into my computer through USB drag and drop.

Untill things are sorted out DO NOT ACCEPT or Install the Update. WIll post as soon as more comes in.

Now, I dont see the "root" folder anywhere on the SD card, and I am just wondering if I just put the app on the SD card itself... I am using a Mac and this is my first root. Seems easy enough after this....

Never mind...
