Root Root my S5

Do you have a good link for rooting an S5, there's 100's of pages out there which would you use.
Also I have a German S5 would that make any difference?

Thanks

Well it shouldn't matter what country the s5 is from. You might find a root method for lollipop in the s5 forums.

Thanks for the reply. So if I rooted my german S5 it would be the same kernel used to root it as if I had the U.K version.

The reason I ask is that I live in the U.K but have an S5 bought in Germany, I was thinking that if after I rooted the phone I had to manually update to new firmware in future that I could install the U.K firmware.

Thanks

ETA Oh also is there any point in changing to the U.K version or are they the same other than language defaults?

Back in my S2 days, the kernel was immaterial provided it matched the firmware's Android version e.g. a 4.4.2 firmware was rooted with a kernel that also originated from 4.4.2. Chainfire maintained a wonderfully-detailed thread at XDA which listed every Samsung firmware build number with the corresponding modified kernel to use.

All EU firmwares will be fully functional within that market region, as GSM/LTE frequency bands are standardised and English (UK) is always included as a language.

However, since things have no doubt moved on since then, I'll move this to the Galaxy S5 - All Things Root sub-forum where the experts (and @ironass :) ) can better advise you.

Cheers Slug! Next time I'm in court, remind me to get you to come and give me a character reference!

Right, as I've just rooted the latest firmware release from Singapore, OC2, using this kernel... I know it works on all G900F firmwares.

As you have the International model, G900F, you will need the SM-G900F (International Qualcomm) CF- Root kernel from post #3 of [SM-G900*] CF-Auto-Root. The thread describes how to flash this using Odin with step-by-step instructions. Please read them carefully and thoroughly.

Great thanks.

Eventually will I be able to have a rooted stock phone with a custom recovery for backups?

I've still got plenty of reading to do :-)

One thing that I'm not certain from the FAQS is once I've rooted if I stay stock and then need to factory reset do I have to re root the device?

Thanks

Ok thanks. I think I'll root and stay stock for now and look at CM12 once it's a bit more mature.

CM-12 has been a bit, "flakey", on the nightly releases since the beginning of the month and I am finding that stock Samsung TouchWiz is much better in lots of respects, particularly the latest OC2 build for Singapore which I flashed yesterday and is the best stock Lollipop so far and has a much higher changelist number. Lots of under-the-hood improvements. :)

I'm using it on my GS3 at the moment, I like it but the camera doesn't work and it does seem a bit flakey. I'm not sure if the GS3 version is undergoing the same level of development that the GS5 version is.

If you mean you have Cyanogen official nightly's on your Samsung Galaxy S3, i9300, it's only on CM-11, KitKat still, not CM-12 which is Lollipop.

That won't install a custom recovery as well though will it? Would I be better following the link below so I can do both at the same time?

Thanks

I'll take a look thanks. Should I root first before installing a custom recovery and would you suggest TWRP over CWM?

I had a good read on android partitions last night and feel I have a much better understanding of what's happening. I'm just going to go over adb commands before rooting as I like to know at least roughly what I'm doing rather than just follow some instructions. I'm never quite sure if FAQs or wikis are upto date.

Thanks for your help.

As per my previous post... I would root first and then flash my preferred custom recovery, TWRP.

DO NOT... I repeat... DO NOT mess around with the .PIT partition files. You do not need to and they can brick your phone unless you know precisely what you are doing. You do not need ADB for rooting and a custom recovery. Just Odin.

Apologies I had missed part of what you wrote and have now seen the link thanks. Don't worry I'm not intending to alter the partitions I was just trying to understand the process of installing custom recovery and rooting before I do it.

Thanks.
