You don't need an app to root a Nexus device...you:
- unlock the bootloader (this will wipe your device, however)
- flash or soft-boot a custom recovery
- install Chainfire's UPDATE-SuperSU-v#.##.zip file
- reboot and you have root
There are a few threads around that go over how to do this * or you can use a tool like the Wug Fresh's Nexus Root Toolkit to assist you from a Windows PC.
