Root root noobie, please help

Hey guys, my name says it all. I just got this phone, coming from an iPhone 3gs that was jail broken. Im planning on rooting my phone, buthave no damn clue on what to do. Can someone please advise. Incurrently on 2.3.6, not sure if that's an issue. Also what are the benefits of rooting and what is the next step to rooting? Thanks guys.

I came from a jailbroken 3GS and rooted immdiatley... then I kinda regretted it lol. The OS has alot of capabilities and customization out of the box and already in the market. The main thing I stay rooted for is for an app that lets me determine what each individual app can access on my phone (kinda like an app firewall), and other apps that clear the cache(s) and backup data.

I'll have to repost what I used to root when I get home to my PC... but it was really simple. But I would consider figuring out what the phone can and can't do before you root.
