Root .::Root Notification Thread (Root Achieved and thread open)::.

WoooHoooo... Hawks win the Cup and Incredible has Root what an awesome day, now off to Drive 15hrs to Chicago for the Parade will root my phone when I get back ...YEAHHH!!!!

Is anyone able to get it to keep root after rebooting? I have no issues getting root in the recovery mode, but I lose it when I restart the phone. Also my display matches the screen shot above for the messages when applying the update... this differs from the screen shot here though:

Incredible Owners, Rejoice – First Successful Root Achieved On The HTC Droid Incredible By The Unrevoked Team | Android News, Reviews, Applications, Games, Phones, Devices, Tips, Hacks, Videos, Podcasts - Android Police

So they must have changed something in the update file for the display to be different. Perhaps that is why we don't have root after restarting.

I highly suggest people wait till the permanency issue gets resolved. Its a waste of time at this point other than to remove city id

EXACTLY.

A lot of work to simply be able to remove ONE app. This root method is NOT permanent. You will lose root if you reboot.

This is a significant step in getting the Incredible rooted and is very exciting. However, the best thing for users is to WAIT PATIENTLY until they get a payload that makes this root permanent. Won't take long now.

No use in risking borking your phone just to be able to remove one app....

Just curious so feel free to delete this post, but if one were to root their Inc, install a wifi tether app, reboot and subsequently lose root, would the wifi tethering still work?

Just looking for another reason to attempt rooting this thing besides removing CityID.

Same here...I would like to know what benefit there is to rooting a phone - other than removing stock apps like City ID.

Hell, wifi tethering would be great but it's not that hard to connect the USB cord (if using it for a laptop). It charges my phone and tethers at the same time. Not too shabby!

Anyway, thanks to everyone working on this. Wish I could contribute but don't have the technical know-how. I'll continue cheering from the sidelines.

You can overclock, load custom ROMs, custom kernels, get better battery life, theme your own phone, use apps like AutoKiller and MetaMorph, and get rid of Sense! I can't wait. I just got my Incredible in the mail today. Time to get cooking. :D

They already got it to be permanent.

Can't wait for a user friendly way to root my Inc. I can only imagine how awesome it will be to finally have full access to the Inc and load on a custom ROM. Been missing that ever since I switched over from my Hero.

when are custom roms gona be out? and also after rooting is there anything to do cuz nothing is out for the incredible yet..

"User friendly" and "root" shouldn't be used in same sentence. If you want user friendly, use phone as-is. If you want root, you are a power user, and should have no problem understanding how this works or how to do it. It is really fairly simple. The "hard" part of writing the code has been done, the EU is really just playing whack-a-mole in a sense to inject it.

Given how obscure this hole in the bootloader is, I doub't it will be able to be made much easier. It is not hard now really, just potentially time consuming and frustrating. only real risk from breaking your phone with it is from throwing it across the room from not being able to get adb to work in recovery at 60 reboots..

Speaking of reboots, this guy Centsy posted a "easier" way to get adb working in recovery by popping sd card in and out; worked for me on first try. His post is in this same forum, but ill repeat:

1. With your phone booted up and plugged in via USB, type adb reboot recovery.
2. Start your adb shell loop (using the while loop or bat file).
3. Click in and out your SD card repeatedly while the phone is booting into recovery (apparently every 0.5 sec will do).
4. Watch for "- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -" to appear in your terminal, then hit "ctrl-c" to break batch job so you can work
5. Follow the rest of the instructions

This must be the most kludgy hack for root ever, lol, but it works! Got cityID removed, setCPU working (no overclock yet of course) and a few other root aps I like (adfree, etc.)

Getting ADB to run in recovery was a PITA as it was, but getting timing right between when you run update.zip in recovery and push the payload zip is as much of a PITA. Hint here: if you don't get timing right, just push ota.zip again, then try the "install update.zip/push payload.zip" on phone; no need to start all over from beginning. What this looks to be doing is "tricking" recovery into thinking it is loading an official signed update during the verification process, and at just the right moment before it loads it, you do a "swicharoo" with the "hacked" payload so it gets installed instead...

Good luck!

Anon - can we lock this thread back up until the root process becomes a little easier? It would be kind of nice to subscribe to the thread and only receive an update on root.

got it rooted finally had to buy a 16gb class 6 card to do it but it is done. wifi tethering check.....

Note tried 3 cards
2gb with incredible did not work
16gb with my wifes droid class 2 card did now work

16gb class6 card worked first try doing the in and out method on sd card.

Yes, please.

At least let folks know that it is not a guaranteed thing, there is a bit of chance in the adb recovery bit. This drove me and lots of other folks crazy for days!
