Root Root now, or later?

I've been wanting to root my Droid Bionic (ICS 4.0.4) for a while now. I was all set to do it yesterday, but I read that Jelly Bean will be released for the Bionic in the very near future (Q2 of 2013). My question is: Should I wait until after Jelly Bean is installed on the phone before I root it, or does it really make any difference? Will I be able to use the same Windows script written for ICS to root a Jelly Bean Bionic, or will I have to wait until a new program is written to root the JB Bionic? Thx :)

Nobody can tell yet how the JB update will impact rooting and the current processes we use to attain root on our devices because there are no leaks out there of it yet. Chances are, there will have to be some adjustments made and there is no telling how long that might take. Again, no leaks. Rooting is a rather simple process though. IMHO if you want to root do it now. There is also no guarantee of when the JB update will officially release for the Bionic. (though there is speculation that a soak test is currently in progress) 2Q 2013 could mean June 30, or they could miss that deadline completely like they have MANY MANY times in the past...

Thanks, Sneitzel. I went ahead and rooted it last night. I got a tip about the program Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper that allows you to make a copy of you root so you can re-apply it after a manufacture's ota update.

Everything went great...no problems. Rooted phone, updated Superuser binary, activated firewall in avast mobile security, installed Safestrap 3.11 and Titanium Backup Pro. Then I installed voodoo and copied root. Everything seems to run faster and smoother after the root. Next task is to remove some bloatware! :D

Not sure if you are still looking for answer, but if you want root in JB, you HAVE to root in ICS and do it in a specific manner using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. House of Bionic has all of that in the latest. As of now, there is no known way to root under JB if you don't save root first using this method, and the way Samuri and others are talking, they doubt there will ever be one as the person who found the majority of the root exploits no longer does it.

Appreciate that, wildkitten. Sounds like anyone who buys a new phone with JB pre-installed will have to install ICS, do the root, and then update back to JB.

Well this is merely for the Bionic, not all JB devices. And once you upgrade to JB on the Bionic there is no going back to ICS.

Samuri has mentioned there MIGHT be a very complicated root exploit but that in addition to it being complicated, it would also require someone having Linux. But even this isn't a guarantee.

Thus far that has not panned out. We're stuck at no root for JB devices unless you have a method to restore root that was applied prior to taking the update (IOW, VooDoo OTA Rootkeeper).

Yeah, and that's not even guaranteed to work in every case. But better to try.
