Root or 2.0 or both?????

I have three kids and read through some stuff before posting. THat being said the best way to deter repeat threads is to post a couple links and mention you found them using search. Most get the hint and don't think your a tool and may even come backk and contribute later. We were all newbies at one point.

Really --- how about if one of the regulars/experts simply posts that the question has been covered in other threads, and - to be helpful if you have time - suggest a search term or keyword that will yield some relevant results. A cut and paste answer might even work in many cases. No need to be rude and demeaning - even if that's what you are thinking! I understand the frustration, but some answers are not friendly.

I love this forum and read it daily. I've learned so much about how to get the most from my Eris. However, I hesitate to start a post because I suspect that somewhere, buried in all of the threads, my question has been answered, and people will come down on me. If I can't find the answer to my question after searching a few keywords in a reasonable amount of time, I would like to post my question. Is this reasonable? It seems it depends on who reads the question.

Come on guys, we were all new once. Not everyone is familiar with forum life and sometimes if you don't use the right terms the search won't give you what you want. This is supposed to be a friendly and helpful environment for everyone, not just for tech heads.

If you're going to reply, give him the answer and then tell him to use the search next time. You act like he's wasting YOUR precious time asking a question on a message board. You're the one wasting your own time.

Who cares if there's 100 of the same topic? IT isn't like the board breaks after so many duplicate topics are made. People want personal answers for their specific question and situation.

Yes all the answers are somewhere on the internet and in some cases here on this board. The only thing that makes this place different from a website where you can't talk to anyone is the fact someone can post a topic asking a question. If you assholes try to take that away we might as well just shut down the ability to post topics by anyone but caddyman and that way everyone can just search for their answers.

Elitist attitudes can ruin a forum. Although given the amount of 2.0 and root threads we have here, a quick search would have eliminated the need to start yet another one. Welcome to the forum Chrli3. Don't let what someone else says about your post upset you. Remember tone and inflection don't always translate that well to text so try not to take what anyone says personally. Also note that some of the frustrations expressed here are not entirely directed at you. Its honestly a great forum, and its the absolute best forum for the Eris. We were all noobs once, and like OTD said, not every is that familiar with forum life.

Lol so much for not keeping this thread up at the top! By the way I just joined last night, glad to meet you all.

Thanks Joetarin and carmencrishnaya, the rest of the thread police can go hell.(tyring to keep it clean on your precious thread board) Sorry if you all were inconvienced for a minute but you know what? I did look . you try searching for threads while 3 kids all under the age 0f 6 are pulling you three different ways. obviously you all have no kids or just ignore them. but if was refreshing to see how you (except joe and carmencrishnaya)all took the time to to bash me instead of just telling me were to find the info.I cant wait to ask another dumb ass question. If you cant help me just dont reply. sorry to ramble on but I was curious if any of the replyers would take the time out of their precious day to actually read the whole thing.
But Joe the thanks again for the link.

No problem man. Glad I could help. You asked a question and I had an answer (or at least could point you to the answer). That's what this forum is about helping others who have a common interest.

LOL Welcome to Android Forums :-) Not everyone here is a jerk. There are a bunch of us who are willing to help with what we can. But yeah we've all done it, maybe not realized there was another topic started somewhere and accidently asked again... While othere just don't feel like searching.

So was there an answer to the OP's question? I'd like to know as well.

I'll explain as best I can, although I'm far from an expert and you should probably read the link in the second post, and then poke around the Root subforum up at the top of the page to confirm/learn more.

"Root" or "rooting" your phone means that you have access to the base level coding of the phone's operating system and can adjust it as you see fit. For most average users (and some advanced ones) this is pointless because unless you're willing to tinker with actual source code and have a firm background in coding, there's really nothing that you can actually do. There are members of this forum, and others, who have been trying for some time to gain access to the Eris 1.5 OS's root functions through various exploits and loopholes. (Let's just call it "hacking" for simplicities sake.) Once they're successful in gaining access to the root level of the phone, other coders can use that "hack" to modify the phone's code settings at will and make modified/tweaked versions of the phone's native OS that will run things more efficiently. (These modified versions of the OS are called "roms" and are best described as software that would replace your existing OS, which on the Eris is the 1.5 version of the Android platform for HTC.)

2.0 or 2.1 is the next iteration of the stock (unaltered) version of Android that is rumored to be coming to HTC handsets (including the Eris) in the next few weeks or so. It will offer some upgrades and tweaks, but more than likely nothing as in depth or fine-tuned as a rom that is running on a phone that has been rooted. For the record, the current Eris rooting efforts are all focused on exploits and hacks that will work with the 1.5 version of the OS that we currently have access to. There's no telling whether or not the 2.1 update will close those loopholes or not, but there's a real possibility that updating to 2.1 will mean that rooting your phone won't be possible. Having said that, if you have a rooted phone, there will more than likely eventually be modified 2.1 OS rom's available at some point that will allow those with rooted phones to enjoy the features that 2.1 provides. To summarize, updating to 2.1 COULD mean rooting won't be possible. (Won't know until we get both root and our 2.1 update.) Rooting a phone running 1.5 PROBABLY won't exclude you from the tweaks and updates that 2.1 will provide. Again, kind of a wait-and-see scenario there.

As for how easy it is/will be to root your phone once we have the know how to accomplish such things, I have no practical experience, so no real clue. I'm assuming it will be a somewhat dicey, but relatively easy procedure to complete. Something akin to reflashing your mobo BIOS to an updated version or updating your router's firmware. It is a technically iffy process, with the potential to kill your hardware if you screw up, but should work fine as long as you follow the detailed step-by-step instructions exactly as detailed. (Again, those instructions don't exist, yet, because we don't know how but eventually we'll be able to get our mitts on them.)

I hope this helps somewhat. It's the issues as best as I can see and explain them. I may be completely off base on a few points, but expect that if I am, I'll be corrected in short order. :p

qft

let the mods do thier job

It won't matter. This is something that happens on every message board. You can post as many warnings and stickies as you want. It won't change anything. The best answer is to ignore the thread

Must be a lot of message forum newbies around, including the ones who think people will search. As you say, no amount of stickies, FAQs, etc will make a difference. Repeating what you said, IGNORE threads and maybe, just maybe, that will FORCE the poster to make add'l efforts.

I wish more people had this philosophy.

I'll tell you this much. If n00bs continue to break guidelines similar to the ways in which frequent contributors do, the veterans will leave and this forum will turn to sh*ts.

If veterans are expected to be "courteous", then new members are expected to search or make an attempt to find the answer themselves. A forum with 90 unanswered threads on 2.1 is no good either.

If you want premium users, I'm not going to pay $40 a year to ignore threads and get pissed off when someone asks the same question for the umpteenth time. Then I'm fine the way it is and I can go on hiatus for weeks at a time like many (relatively) long-time members have. Caddyman and the few others can keep this forum alive constantly answering the same questions over and over again. I can't.

I'm just a noob but I know enough when I read comments like yours that there are some who apparently feel superior and have no conscience when it comes to continuing the very thread you are complaining about.

Sure, when attempting to prove who has a bigger dick, why not do it on a phone forum?

I was stating my opinion, shh, so shh for a little bit and check when the last time I was on here was. You'll understand where, what, and why my first was where it was.

smacky your getting a little ahead of yourself there. i ignore things that irk me too, all the 2.1 threads make we want to flambe kittens, but it is easy to ignore them, really it doesnt bother me at all.....relax there tiger.
