Root Root or wait

My DHD seems to be getting to the end of its life, battery is really going quickly throughout the day these days, having to charge it mid way through my working day rather than the end of the day (8.5 hours @ work).

Is it worth Rooting it or wait until my contract can be upgraded in May?

Hi there!

I would say root now and then upgrade in May! The added fun rooting and custom roms will give you should be able to get you through the next few months

Root it. I still try out different ROM's for my old dhd, and I have a galaxy note and nexus 4!

Rooting and putting a new ROM extends the life a lot more than I thought.

If I didn't root, I don't think I'd enjoy using my phone.

I especially like it when all my iFanboy friends look and my phone and point out bits that make it slightly superior in certain ways. :P

Once you get over the rooting process itself it's all good fun. There are so many custom roms to choose from on the DHD. Like Omar I too have a N4 but so far have kept it stock as it does what I need it to do. Only problem I have at the moment is it's currently back in the box it came in with a bust front screen waiting for further instructions from LG to get it repaired. Gutted.....YES!

Rooting will likely bring new excitement and enjoyment of your phone. However, your battery having less capacity as time passes might require you to purchase a new battery one way or another. It's just the way of batteries... they usually die a slow death. Best of luck to you which ever way you decide to go.

Yeah, I'm definitely noticing kinda poor battery use. Not sure if it's rom based or just because the battery is old...

Would Orange have replaced the battery when the refurbed it?

It's unlikely, they'll have only done the bare minimum and if the fault reported wasn't battery related, they won't have changed it.

In that case my battery is more than likely 2 years old. Might consider getting a new one as i have no idea when I'm allowed a new one.

I rooted when I found out HTC was not going to release an update in July 2012. For about a month after that I pretty much used one ROM, while playing with new apps which only work with rooted devices. The next for months I really had fun with my phone flashing almost everything available for it (50 flashes or so).

Battery. My phone is 25 months old. I replaced my battery (65&) or original capacity on the 15th month with one from the HTC Service Center (US$25). I also go a third battery about two months ago... HTC battery from Amazon for about US$7. A new battery is well worth it. Go the Amazon route though.

Since my carrier changed retention policy I will be keeping this phone longer than expected. But rooted with a current operating system and two good batteries, it does not bother me too much. I am inclined to wait for the HTC M7 or Galaxy S IV. The HTC Butterfly came out here, which would have been tempting enough to buy for cash... but the local version has no LTE

I rooted mine in September 2011 when we were told that sense 3 wasn't coming out way... And then it did. I didn't feel like waiting till easter the next year, so i rooted and installed ARHD. Good times ;-)

First off, if you're concerned about the battery, you could just buy a new one. I've seen DHD batteries for as low as $6 in online stores. I carry a spare and just swap the drained one out for the fully-charged one. That's one reason I will never buy a phone that doesn't have a user-replaceable battery (I'm looking at you, iPhone. :wavey:)

Secondly, I would say that rooting is safe IF you are good at reading and following directions to the letter. That is, if you only actually proceed when you're sure you know what you're doing, you should be fine. If not, you need to stay the hell away from rooting. And also my phone.

Thirdly, people that have rooted and flashed their way to a ROM flavor of ICS and/or Jellybean (mmmmm.... tasty) report that those versions of Android run just fine on the DHD.

Fourthly, the longer you wait to upgrade, the more likely a newer/better/hotter/younger/smarter/sexier phone might come on the market. :)

I concur.

My contract runs out this month but I want to see what the S4 and HTC One pan out like before upgrading.

I've put Jellytime 4.2 (https://code.google.com/p/jellytime/) on my Desire HD and it has improved so much I might just keep it the Desire HD and go to a much cheaper sim only deal.

I was a complete novice at ROM's and upgrading, but a couple of YouTube videos guided me through.

Never having done this before, can anyone recommend a good link with step by step guide as to how to do this.

Use the AAHK found in the all things root sticky. Proper instruction (I believe) are still on the XDA page.

All you need to do is download and rum the tool with your phone connected via the usb cable. Some recommend to do it in a Linux environment although I didn't have any problems on windows.

It's actually looking like the guy who created the AAHK has pulled his link... we are looking in to this at the moment, to see if we can get in touch with him and will let you know :)
