By rooting your phone, you are able to install custom ROM's. These can be faster than stock ROM's, as devs can take out any carrier bloatware and optimize the operating system.
It is worth bearing in mind that, by rooting, you void your warranty. Don't get me wrong... I have rooted my phone (a Desire HD) - I actually rooted less than a month after I got it and have been more than happy with it. Rooting certainly has made the 2 year contract bearable, as I can change the ROM as often as I want.
I am not familiar with your phone or how to root it, but I am sure that others in here will be able to give you any and all advice you need if you do decide to go for it!!

Rooting the i777 won't improve the performance. Like the second post said, it allows you to install custom ROM, kernel, modem, etc, and that will improve it depending the selection. One more thing, you have to know what you are doing because one false step may brick it to non-operational!
