Root [ROOT] Photon Rooted - No Dock Needed!

A bit new to the rooting/android scene as a whole, but what exactly can we do with our Photon's now that we can root it? Is it possible to download emulators on it now? or how exactly does it work? Thanks in advance.

It allows a level of customization not previously possible to utilize. For example...you can remove any app (be careful doing so), can modify things beyond what is allowed normally (will eventually be able to overclock, etc.). It really allows YOU to own the device, and make it your own.

There are many apps designed to work with rooted phones that can help you get better battery life, smoother performance, etc.

See this thread for more explanations! HERE

I keep getting device not found aftet the second command???

Make sure you've installed the necessary drivers. It's either 32 or 64-bit....depending on your PC. For me, Windows 7 required the 64. After installing, the commands were a breeze.

Thanks! So im rooted finally. Now if i could just get wireless teether to work. :/ my computer wont connect for some reason.

So what are you guys using to back your phones up? This will be the first time I root and when I was prepared to dive in and try it on my EVO HTC closed the exploit.

Interestingly enough I got to this step
"/data/tmp/photon-torpedo.sh"

And it popped up saying
Error: ld.so: object 'libpcprofile.so' cannot be loaded as audit interface: undefined symbol: la_version; ignored.

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.xo-lock and start again

Closing log

EDIT: NVM Im ******ed

The xda forums should help

Thanks, I did figure it out that I am rooted however. Im still wondering why that popped up saying that.

I was just thinking about the position Motorola is in and the unlocked bootloader issue. They promised unlocked bootloaders, but this phone is markets for being secure and business oriented and releasing that kinda information could lead to security issues making it pointless to market this thing and possibly leading to a breach of security on phones already in networks. So, long story short I dont think Motorola is actually going to unlock this one in particular.

Over on XDA, they've got the bootloader unlocked and give instructions. Guess it doesn't matter if Moto does it or not. In fact, probably better that Moto doesn't, so we don't have to sign away our warranty rights.

I'm rooted, I'm rooted. Oh, how I have missed adfree and titanium backup. Can't wait to see how this thing will run when someone figures out how to throttle it.

It took me a few tries. I tried to do it through my laptop and the command prompt with no luck. I then downloaded the terminal emulator and voil

Im still looking for an ad blocker that I like, mostly they seem to block them on the internet but none really block in game ads.

I forgot about the root, and downloaded the ota update. Wait for it...........I lost root. Haven't tried to re-root yet. Doh.

I tried multiple times and whenever I try to access /data/tmp it always replies access denied. Read only blah blah blah. I will be forced to wait until a new non dock root method is available. I tried accessing it from cmd on a W7 laptop and a linux code through the phone.

Did not work for me, It goes through to the end and it says adb.exe is not recognized as an internal or external command, program or batch file and then it says you should have root.

Well I go to use Titanium backup and every single time it tells me it has failed to root. I have no idea what I did wrong but I dont have root still. I tried rebooting the phone and even retrying to root but the same results occurred.

Download Root Check from Marketplace (free). Run advanced to see if you are Rooted. Also check BUSYBOX to see if it works. You can download BUSYBOX from Marketplace. Once you do, update to 1.19. It's the latest. Titanium should work then. Mine works just fine.

New to rooting (rooted 1 phone previously through Super One Click) and interested in this method. Should we be creating backups of our systems before following the root instructions? I know Titanium Backup is thrown around a lot w/ rooting, but can only be used after the phone has been rooted.

What apps/methods can be used to create a backup before rooting, if that is necessary?

Also, what are the benefits of rooting through this method? It doesn't appear there are many ROMs/kernels out there at this point for the Photon, so is rooting just to uninstall some stock apps and customize boot screens, icons, etc.?

my one click doesnt wipe anything, unlocking the bootloader will however wipe /data, so it will have to be set up all over again

You can install backup apps like Titanium Backup (and use all features available in MyBackup Pro) if you root to preserve your application data and settings. That's the big reason to root outside of what you mentioned, and for preparing to unlock the bootloader. No, there aren't many ROMs out there yet, but more will come. Lots of hot phones are being released right now, so the devs are busy.
