Root Root Plans - advise?

Hi, new to this part of the forum so sorry if this has been asked a million times---

I'm planning on getting my mom a D3 for the Holidays. She's been begging me for a smart phone for a while now and I think she's ready - she needs a physical keyboard and loved my OG so I thought a D3 would be perfect with its larger screen. I'm getting a Gnex myself so I am thinking she will want ICS on her phone as well. I think the font will be easier for her to read and the magazine style contacts will appeal to her as well.

And here is the tricky part - I haven't rooted any of my android before so I'm a little nervous. I've been reading over this forum to start to get an idea how the process will be. I'm planning on using the method in the sticky - on a Mac. But I'm not sure what ROM to use or if there is one for ICS yet (or if there will be one soon)?

I'm also wondering about ways to lock certain functions - think like a child lock or computer nanny. My mom has a nack for getting malware and other nasties on her devices.

Sorry for the long post!:o Any tips you experts can give would be appreciated though! :)

Well as of right now there is only one ICS based rom and it is still in alpha... It is called Zero Narcot1cs... there is also an ICS theme that can be easily flashed with a stock deodexed rom, Droid concepts has one that wud be perfect...

as for locking functions I think you can do that right from settings but I dont have a lot of experience with that so i am not sure...

As for virus protection, AVG has an app out there, but I don't use it anymore. It just used up extra battery life IMO. For ICS and fonts, you can easily change the font once rooted, so if that's why you wanted ICS (for the font), you can get it on the D3. It's in a fonts app and is called Roboto.

I'm not worried about her battery life. She doesn't use her phone too often. I'll definitely use the Roboto font, I think it's so easy to read!

Since phone use is minimal, initially get her a bloated ROM so that there aren't any features cut out which could cause force closes and have some things missing she may want. If this proves to use too much battery, then get her a debloated ROM, but what may cause us to ask online and flash a .zip'd fix over, would be a huge headache to her. Also, I suggest you get the Font Installer app. There's hundreds of choices, Roboto included.
