Root [Root] Please help a new guy out

I don't know if it's frowned upon to make a thread like this, but here it goes.
I've been a proud owner of the HTC evo 4G for the past month, and new to the Android OS.
I did a lot of lurking in android forums, and a lot of people seem to root their phones. I was fine without rooting my phone, until I just got bored with the Sense U.I.
There are so many themes that I want to try but I guess I have to root my phone.

I really don't know where to start, I browse XDA a lot, but the information is overwhelming.
I don't even know what ROM to pick!

I did the manual unofficial update to Froyo 2.2, the one that HTC pulled off.

So my question is, can anyone help me get started?
I'm just asking for someone to help me through step by step on how to ROOT my phone, install a good ROM, and then themes.

Please anyone help?

If you have already upgraded to 2.2 you cannot root your phone. You will have to wait until a new exploit is found.
