Root Root Possible with AlphaRev X

there aren't directions on how to do it yet, but from what i've read on xda the developers have already made a kernel and are working on getting the guide to unlock it together and working on a rom for it already. should know more within the next couple days.

Well the lifecycle certainly decreases with overclock, but these days the hardware's standard lifecycle is well beyond the use of the device. I had my OG Droid OC'd up to 1 GHz for the entire time I owned it and never skipped a beat. My Nook Color was also OC'd up to 1.3GHz (from 800). Not something to always worry about. Keep in mind that the stepping included in the kernels make it so the device rarely spends it's time at the max frequency.

The chips usually ship underclocked, if anything. So it's perfectly normal to run it slightly higher right away and then begin to push as you see fit. I would imagine starting the Inc2 at 1.2GHz to begin with. Although, I bet it's along the lines of the OC that the original Inc guys run given it's the same architecture more or less, just updated. I don't know what they run, though.
 
For those who want to use Ubuntu (it's not that difficult once you get used to it):

1. Download Ubuntu from the Ubuntu site.
2. Burn image onto CD/DVD (follow instructions provided at the site. If you have Windows 7, you can simply use the Windows Disk Image Burner program).
3. Reboot computer. Allow Bootup popup menu (usually F8?).
4. Select DVD/CD-drive.
5. Wait a bit for things to load. Choose "Try" aka Live CD Mode, no need to install, unless you want Ubuntu.
6. Connect phone. Download AlphaRevx for Linux. Keep that browser window open.
7. Extract the downloaded file and make sure it's at the root directory (in Ubuntu, that's Ubuntu/Ubuntu, if I recall correctly).
8. Search for the Terminal (Windows key pops up the search, I think; otherwise, it's the icon on the top left corner of your screen), run Terminal.
9. Type in "sudo ./alpharevx".
10. It'll provide a key. Go back to the browser window where you downloaded Alpharevx - there's a form to fill out. Type in the key. It'll generate a second key. Type that key into the Terminal.
11. Make sure it says that everything is successful. It'll ask if you want to flash Clockwork. Type in "Y".
12. Once it shows success, reboot.
13. Go to this page and download the superuser file "su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip" under "To Root". Follow those instructions shown.
14. You're done.
 
Has anyone tried this yet? Does it really work? I'm thinking of waiting until after Monday, I've seen a lot of chatter about an update Monday...

Ok so i just learned that its either root or update, not both, hmmm decisions. I think I will give root a shot, I want the free hot spot & to get rid of all the preinstalled crap apps.

There is an option to flash Clockwork while you root with alpharevx. Then all you do is put the su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip on your SD card and install that through Clockwork and your superuser will work.

I just did it ... after downloading everything it took all of 15 minutes start to finish. I recommend having the su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip file on your sd card from the begining ... just one less step once you get going.

Pretty much ... at this point I have not flashed a custom rom ... I have Barnacle and Titanium Backup working and have uninstalled the bloatware ... Tomorrow I will make a backup and then start looking for a good rom
 
I have a question before ota gb comes out. Besides the ruu gb rom released last week, is there a way to root, and get a gb rom rom identical to the ota one coming out without bloatware and a oc kernel? Because cm7 is nice but I love sense. Sorry if this is a noob question

Although there are never any guarantees, the Devs over at XDA forums will almost guaranteed release a bloat free and deoxed GB rom a few days after the OTA is released. It has happened on every phone I've ever owned.
