Root Root Question/Issue...

Yellow Snowman

Android Enthusiast
I'm in the process of rooting. I'm at the step in adb where I type "adb reboot bootloader"

At this point it is supposed to ask me if I want to upgrade but its not. Instead my only options are:

Fastboot
Recovery
Factory Reset
Simlock
HBoot USB
Image CRC

What do I do?

in order for hboot to to find the file, you must have a FAT32 formatted sd card, and it must be named EXACTLY PG05IMG.zip

look at the PG05IMG file on the phone using astro file manager(from the market) and see what it is named. if you are using a windows machine and typed in the ".zip" then prolly your prollem is that the file is actually named on the phone "PG05IMG.zip.zip" as windows will add the .zip for you, automagically :D

as its reading the file, youll see a blue progress bar as it discovers and reads the file, then a yellow progress bar as it checks it(if i remember correctly). it takes a looooong time,so as long as your seeing the status bars, hang in there and be patient... its working :)

scotty, I have file manager already but i'm stuck in HBoot mode or whatever its called. How do I get into file manager from here?

And at the moment I dont think my computer has found my computer device. it was before but doesnt seem to now

I'm new to the lingo, what specifically can I do?

i believe if you choose "fastboot" in the hboot menu, there is an option to reboot the phone.

if not you will have to pull the battery

phone connectivity(lack of ;)) may be because you do not have hboot/fastboot drivers installed. if adb is still not seeing the phone after you reboot back into the normal OS,try unplugging it for a minute. if that doesnt help,i have had to reboot my pc in order for the phone to be seen again. im new to adb as well,so i have no idea what causes the "phone not beeing seen" issues,or what other fixes there may be :)

ok so I restarted the phone and re-downloaded those 3 files.

What to do now? Just drag those 3 downloaded files to my desktop and resume where?

i am not sure... i used the "easyroot" method, and it was almost 900mb with all the included files

where ever you are following directions should have download links for all the files you need. what was the name of the PG05IMG file on your sd card?

shoot, I should have done easyroot method. I'm clearly not good at this.

the file was PG05IMG.zip I think

Should I be able to open that file? Or just copy and paste in sd card? when i tried to open it says I cant

no,you definately shouldnt open it. just drag it to the root of your SD card. if it was named correctly, double check and make sure the sd card is FAT32,not just FAT or something else.(viewing on the PC you can just right click and view properties on the drive that is your phones sd card)

dont be discouraged. you would actually be having this same issue with easy root. i had alot of trouble getting it to work, and in retrospect would just do it the manual way if i was gonna do it all over again.

Make sure to place the downgrade RUU on the sdcard and then rename it to PG05IMG.zip exactly or it will not see it. And that is a zero and not an O.

ok I got past that step which is great. Now when the phone rebooted its asking me all over again for my google and backup assistant account logins. Should I do that or just skip past it all?

I'm a bit confused as to what step you're on, but if it's the downgrade, don't bother. You're just going to flash it again in a couple of minutes.

If you're flashing the current firmware after getting S-OFF, you might as well enter them.

I just completed this:
Choose the bootloader option and press power; let the ROM flash. When asked to upgrade, choose yes. Don’t freak, it’s a long reboot.
Once done, reboot and delete PG05IMG.zip from your SD card.
But after I restarted it said my device is off line or can't connect to the newtork even though I just received a phone call. Didnt know who the call was since my phone book is gone for now.

Anyways, I just typed in the command:

adb devices

It identifies my device as attached but says its offline

Yeah, your phone needs to re-provision itself. Don't worry, it will happen automatically, but may take up to a couple of hours depending on your area. You can still get phone calls and text messages in the mean time. Do not continue on to the next step before you get a data connection. You can do a hard reset/battery pull if you don't see data in a couple of hours, but mine came back in about 5 -10 minutes.

do you have Debugging on?

ok I disconnected the phone and reconnected and it seems adb is identifying the device properly now.

i think i can continue with the root process now. my phone is wiped completely I think. their is a notification at the top that a new data usage widget is here. Otuside of that seems like a stock phone.

I guess I will hook up my google account later. unless i should do it now and then continue with the root process?

No need to do all that you are going to wipe the phone again with the next step anyway.

ok so I'm a dumbass. As I was getting going and things were going well somehow I copied and pasted something wrong. I know the easiest thing ever and i screwed it up.

I meant to copy and paste a step in step 6 yet instead of copying 1 line i copied like 5 paragraphs.

Now adb doesnt look like it should. All adb has is this...

What can I do? can i change a command after that arrow to keep going?

Ok I'm on this step:

Now, reboot your phone and put the custom RUU (PG05IMG.zip) on your SD card. Then flash it. This will upgrade you to release firmware with an S-OFF bootloader.

My question is, is there an easy way to know for sure I put the right file on my sd card? The one I have with that name is 459Mb (PG05IMG).zip. Is that the right one? Or the one that is 430mb (PG05IMG)?
