Root Root question: Why?

I'm a new Evo user, matter of fact this is my first android phone. I've used blackberrys previously for the last several years.

My question is, What are the benefits from rooting? Excuse my ignorance, but is it somewhat similar to jailbraking an iphone or what?

I guess it's mainly for free tethering or hotspotting.

I seen what appears to be an easier way to do it. Does this accomplish the same goal?

How To Root HTC EVO 4G And Flash Custom ROM

Here are the steps to root HTC EVO 4G:
1. Copy PC36IMG.zip to your sdcard root.

adb push PC36IMG.zip /sdcard​

2. Power off your device. While holding down volume button power on the phone. Keep holding till you see the white bootloader screen.
3. Confirm by pressing YES when asked to flash the device.
4. Again confirm by pressing YES when asked to reboot your device after the flashing is done.
