Root Root question.

Hi, as I understand it, if I root my phone I wont be able to update stock rom.
What about if I root, remove unwanted stock apps, and then un-root?

Also do the root guides work for a Meteor phone (Ireland)?

As I understand it un-rooting involves updating to a stock RUU which will probably include certain unwanted apps although not necessarily all the bloatware that carriers put on there.

You could just root and put a custom ROM on there, by far the funnest thing to do after rooting.

Not sure what a Meteor phone is, is that the carrier / operator?

I am sure someone more qualified will confirm or correct what I have said!
 
No, you won't be able to get OTA updates after rooting, but why would you?

Most custom ROMs have higher versions of the Android OS than stock - CM7 has Android 2.3.7, the latest stock is only 2.3.5. Also by rooting the phone you will be able to solve the biggest problem this phone suffers from - the seriously low memory.

As for whether your phone is compatible with the rooting guide, it will depend on whether it is GSM or not. GSM phones have sim cards, so if yours has a removable sim card, you are good to go.

Meteor is just the carrier and this does not affect the rooting process at all.

Just go to the first post in the 'All things root' section which contains the instructions for rooting the phone. In the final section of this post there is a link to the XDA post that contains links to various ROMs:

Somewhere on there there is a link to a spreadsheet which compares all the available ROMs, but it is very subjective and ultimately you will have to take the plunge and try them out for yourself until you find one that suits you.

Basically ROMs come in two 'flavours': 'Sense' based, and pure Android.

really i think all i want to do is remove all the stock apps, like youtube, peep, facebook and others i dont use.
I quite like the way the stock rom is...
 
I totally agree with Slimchance. The fun part with rooting is that you can put different roms which are much better than stock roms. The updates will always involve minimal changes whereas roms like Cyanogen or other stock roms include many many extra things to the table!!
