Root [ROOT]Questions and Answers from the masses

That is odd, I am rooted using z4 and my lights work. I wish there was a way to adjust their intensity, but in total dark I can see the buttons.

Have you frozen any system apps or uninstalled them? I am what I call "Stock Rooted" which means I did not delete or freeze anything.

Most likely that is it. Hope that is it, cause it would be difficult to complain to Big Red about it.
 
i currently have the D2G and love it, but i keep on hearing about how rooting the phone will make it better. how so? also will rooting it make the phone become laggy and slow?

rooting allows to do to almost anything software related to your phone. things like overclocking, wifi tether, app back ups, and installing custom ROMS (basically tweaked OS builds, that are often smoother, faster, and less buggy than stock). you can even install themes on top of the roms.

rooting will NOT make your phone laggy or slow, it will actually make it FASTER. the process is VERY simple, the one click z4root worked on my R2D2D2, i believe it works on the D2G. and i'm not too sure about the overclocking on the D2G... its already at 1.2, which is pretty damn fast already, you probably wouldnt notice a benefit if you OCed it.

Take a look at the rooting guide and learn. it looks daunting, but it really is easy, and once you do it, you wont want to go back. and if you mess up, you have a whole forum to help you out. :D

no need to download them now, but i would definitely recommend launcher pro. it's got some great options and tons of customizations. i know ADW is the other "standard replacement", but have not used it since i got my D1 a while ago, but it should be just as good.

after downloading z4root (which is no longer available on the market, just google it) just hit the root button and it should work. after it roots, your phone will be exactly how it was before a reboot, except you will have a "super user" app (the app itself doesnt really do much). you can then start exploring the wonders of root access. like i said, read through the guides, download titanium backup and backup your apps, and if you are feeling adventurous, look into a custom rom. im running fission 2.4.3. i know that 2.5.6 is out now. ive had 2.4.3 for a while and it is super smooth for me.


first download the bootstrap recovery (look in the guides for this). it will allow you to back up your current ROM (kind of like a "save as" for everything on your phone), so if anything happens, you can just flash this backup and go right back to where you were before. and it will also let you install custom roms.

the rom manager makes installing the ROM painless by downloading and flashing it for you. Just make sure you back up your current rom.

My D2 did that before I rooted it (it still does now that it is).

Try locking it, then when its locked slide out the keyboard.
It makes my lights come back on then once I unlock it theyll stay on until I reboot.

Use Titanium back up for the apps you want to delete, then uninstall it. That way when you find those few apps you need for another application, you kept, to work you can reinstall it from the backup. Also when updates come out you will be able to re install them all in order to get the update.

Usually when Titanium says this on a rooted phone you can cure it by hitting the "Problems" or something similar, and letting it download a different version of Busybox.

I eventually was able to properly root the phone with the Z4mod.
Now I am truly rooted. doroot seemed to work, but apparently I was not aware I might need to run it a few times. Titanium Backup works now.

What I need now is a noob guide to bootstrap and rom install for Droid 2. The guides I found link to other sites that are no longer up or the material is invalid or it says it is for the Droid 2, but when I get to the guide it says Droid.

I really just want to clean up the bloatware and extend my battery life.
 
It's really simple. You get the droid 2 bootstrapper program, available from koush's website (google it), and fission rom manager lite, available from team defuses' website, which also has simple, detailed instructions on how to download and install the Fission ROM. (again, google it).

Also, be sure to check out droidforums.net, where there is an entire subforum for each of the stable droid 2 ROMs that people are running, where I'm sure you can get specific help.
 
This is a known bug. As was stated, after a reboot, you have to turn the screen off then on once, and this should take care of it. alternatively, you can manually adjust your screen brightness.

nope. after you download launcher pro and hit the home button it will ask you which one you want to use. click the check mark and choose launcher pro. if you find you dont like it then go to menu>settings>applications>launcher pro and then clear defaults. tip: the launcher pro settings are in menu>preferences.
 
getting a Droid 2 and read all about this "locked bootloader" stuff. Is this still a problem for Droid 2? If so what does it stop? I am coming from a Droid 1 that I had rooted and used multiple roms and was wondering the rooting capability differences. Thanks

You can still root, and there are ROM's the difference is that the kernel can not be changed. The ROM's are pretty nice. You can overclock through an app if you want.
 
i'm new here, and to android. trying to find z4 root but when i search it on the market place it can't find it, do you think they took it off?

yep, hit google, or go right to xda. it is haviong trouble now with the latest update on some phones, so it may not work. i know it no longer works on the droid 1
 
Been reading into this rooting stuff a lot, someone mentioned to me making it underclock and some other things which greatly improved his battery life...which is all I'm really concerned about. I've tried all the other tips already. Though Im too much of a wuss to do it, scared I'll brick the phone or something lol.
