Root root,s-off,simunlock,superCID htc merge

Also, the problem occurred when I was flashing ROMs, how do I know the same problem won't occur again when I flash another ROM to get root? What's different this time around? And for step 8 I'm restoring my misc-image. Should I just put the one from my sister's phone on my SD card and then perform the coding to restore it or will I even have to do that part?

im not sure i understand your question. is your phone working again?

if its working,i dont know for sure that flashing the rooted RUU wont screw it up again,as i have no idea why flashing the other ruus screwed it up inthe first place  this is why id do the first option. flash recovery, then flash the merge toolkit. in option one, youre not flashing a whole ruu, just the recovery. and flashing the merge toolkit in recover doesnt alter any /system files that may be affecting phone functionality. it is just adding the superuser app and binary, and installing busybox.

im 99.9% sure that doing option once your phone is working wont kill it again  :D

yes,for the misc image, just flash the one from her phone,it is unmolested. if everything is working fine, text, phone calls, data, etc. i would prolly just skip step 8 alltogether.

Pretty much what we discussed. I still have no idea what went wrong, but after you uploaded that stock ruu I downloaded it and took it up to Bluegrasses office and they reactivated it, no questions asked lol. Then brought it home flashed the recovery ruu, deleted it, replaced it with the merge toolkit, and flashed it in recovery. Turned Superuser on and it's working still downloading apps and trying to figure out how to get the most use out of my root lol.

Glad it worked out. If you hadn't had access to another phone it may have been a lil trickier ;) you can now delete bloatware and use root only apps like wifi tether, for starters.

Just holler if you have any other questions :)

Has anyone verified that a US carrier SIM card will work in a US Cellular phone after this? I have done this to a Verizon Merge, but I am a USCC customer that does not have a merge, but a friend wants me to enhance his phone.

Thanks

just to make sure im understanding the question, are you wanting to use a usc branded merge on a gsm network?

if so the answer is yes. i havent personally done it,but after the root procedure the merge is sim-unlocked. no reason it shouldnt work. just make sure if the phone is not one of the same firmwares that an upgrade ruu is available that you back up your system, recovery and boot images as described above so that we can get you back to your factory firmware if needed.

im runing usc gingerbread on my vzw merge :)

So i recently purchased an unlocked, i assume, htc merge for verizon wireless. The phone was being used on US CELLULAR and was actually updated while using us cellular firmware. My problem is that i had it flashed back to verizon and now it boots up with a us cellular splash screen and everything works with verizon except MMS. The phone IS S-OFF but i have no clue if its rooted or sim unlocked or anything. It does not have a custom recovery either. How can i fix the MMS or flash a Verizon RUU back onto it? Its running android 2.3.4 which was updated while on US CELLULAR. Can i downgrade it to 2.2 and flash a Verizon RUU? I am not sure if its rooted either, I would assume it is since its S-OFF but not completley sure. Any help is GRREATLY apprecited. :D. Im new to this forum so please go easy on me if i have broken any rules with my long post. Thanks

you can tell if its allready rooted by checking for the superuser app in your app drawer. if its there, you can use a root checker app,or download and run a root only app like root explorer or titanium backup, and see if it works.

i actually had the same prollem with usc GB on my vzw merge. everything was fine except mms.

i flashed vzw firmware back, mms worked fine. i backed up the stock misc img,and ran "backup apns". flashed the usc firmware back and restored the vzw misc img, still no mms. restore the vzw apns with the backup apns app. still no mms

at that point i downloaded handcent from the market, and discovered that mms were sending with it just fine. sent a few pics to test, and then after that, stock mms started working

so you might try that before downgrading to froyo.

if you do decide to downgrade, check to see if you have a custom recovery before doing so. select "recovery" in the hboot menu and see where it takes you. a red triangle and ! are the stock recovery.

if you allready have a custom recovery, make a backup before flashing the vzw firmware in case you want to return to where you are. if you dont have one, flash a custom recovery in hboot(i prefer amon, but thats a personal preference) and make a backup.

in the first post there are stock and custom vzw images, you can use either. the custom one is pre rooted and equipped with amon recovery. brace yourself, the stock vzw firmware is filled with bing, instead of google

as for your boot animation, im using the vigor boot animation on mine, its easy to change. if you want i can upload that or the stock vzw boot animation so vzw employess dont look at your phone strangely when its booting up with usc software :D

Does anybody know if these procedures be done on a CDMA phone on nTelos network. They are based out of Richmond VA & now also use all Sprint towers along with theirs. If so any assistance in the setup would be appreciated as I dont have any clue what I'm doing. Thank you in advance.

it should work just fine. after backing up your misc image in step 5(before exit and adb reboot bootloader make sure you perform the steps in post 52 to also back up your system, boot, and recovery images.

i can describe how to make up an ruu for yourself,or you can upload the images, tell me the links, and i can make it for you. if you read some of the posts above, youll see its fairly important to do this, since likely there is not a current RUU for that carrier.

you will also need to let me know what your hboot version is(in your hboot screen) as well as your baseband(in settings/about phone)

but this process will not change ESNs,MEIDs,or MINs,or anything else that identified your phone to a particular carrier.

if you want to wait a couple days, ill try and get a guide for folks with no RUUs put up in the 2nd post. :)

Grrr.... Incorrect About the Sim Card use. Rooted. Ran stock and custom roms STILL no US usage of Sim Card. Tried my AT&T sim card and also an Active Orange UK sim card from the UK that roams on AT&T or Tmobile here in the USa with my other phone it wouldnt work either. YES I have changed the setting to GSM only and everything just NO SERVICE and it wont even find the network at all.

Its the USCC version. Tried stock and custom. SO no go for sim use in the usa. Wasted 4 hours working on this and it was a fail

Yes its sim unlocked and S-Off

maybe a problem with your particular device? if i can find an active sim card i will test mine. from a couple quick searches, seems there is no reason it shouldnt work.

So far over last night. Tried the Verizon rom, Alltel, and the gingerbread uscc rom. and I obtained another merge and stilll no go on 2 active sims and even no go on an active orange UK sim that works here in another phone
On Both whenever I try to search for networks it always says searching or whatever then disapears and says avilable networks and its all blank

I see scotty is still gladly helping the best of us noobs :P haha

I've been rocking my rooted Merge on US Cellular for a solid month now with absolutely no issues and I've been loving every minute of it. A big thanks for scotty again for all of the help!

I have one (dumb) question though. For reasons unknown, I can't receive picture messages. I can send them, but can't receive them. This is the 3rd time this has happened (had the issue even before the root) and I ended up taking it to US Cellular and they did everything they could and couldn't figure it out. Both times I ended up just doing a factory reset, and it fixed the issue. I have no problem losing my data (I've learned over the years not to get too attached to it, as things like this happen) but I've backed everything up with My Backup Pro regardless.

SO, my question is.... when I hold the volume down button and the power button, I go into "hboot" mode (where it has the Fastboot, Recovery, Factory Reset, Simlock, Hboot USB and Image CRC options). This is called hboot, right? Anyway, can I just press the "Factory Reset" option and have my phone get fully reset, but yet still have all of my rooting capabilities? I mean, the Factory Reset button won't mess up my root, right? I definitely don't wanna go through that again.... lol

Thanks in advance!

You can do a factory data reset in hboot,or in recovery, should both do the same thing. :)

Glad you're still enjoying your merge. Did you get all your sense stuff deleted?

Last and not least the factory reset will not affect your root. The su app and binary are system files, and will remain after the reset. Plus you are radio s-offed

Good to hear. So I'm gonna go a head and do a factory reset (in the settings) and I won't have to do anything special after it resets? I'll have all my rooted permissions and what not?

And yes, I got all of my Sense garbage removed just fine. Thanks for asking! :D

Just did the factory reset in the settings and all is good so far, I still have my root :D Using My Backup Pro to restore all my apk's and data now.

First of all, thanks for the great guide. It was easy to follow and I wouldn't have been able to root my Merge without your help! SO thanks again!

One question, does this process give "hard root" access? I want to access root folder (specifically /system/app) to change Mms.apk file. I tried to use Android Commander to edit the folder, but apparently I have not access. According to Android Commander, I do not have root access on my Merge. It might be a problem with the software and not the cell phone. I am stumped

I use the file browser in the Root Toolbox app (I paid for it, but I know there is a free version) and I can get to the system/app folder with no problem. Also, make sure the Super User app or whatever is giving Android Commander root permission.

I'm no expert, but just a thought.

expert or not, that was an excellent answer

as he said, the superuser app and binary are permanetly in system files until you purposely remove them, and is indeed a "hard root".

root explorer is anotehr popular file browser/manager for modifying/moving/deleting/etc system files :)

Thanks for the responses! but is there an easy way to access root folder via computer (i.e. through explorer) or would I have to go through cmd? If it doesn't work, I'll stick to Root Explorer.

you can "adb push/pull <filename> /<location>" thru a command window, but i wouldnt call that easier. to move, delete, copy or modify system files root explorer or similar is prolly the easiest method.

sd card files are easily modified via plugging in to the PC,but unfortunately /system does not show up in a similar manner. you could make a copy of system(described above),and with linux(maybe with the right windows programs,i dont know) unpack the image, modify it,repack it,then reflash it. but again, definately not the easist way.more of something that youd do for S&Gs for the fun of it,or just to see if you could ;)

I have tried to do this following the guide and have realized that no matter what I do I can't get my phone to go into s-off. Would this be bacause I am running 2.3.4 already? I can't find a way to root this phone either. I have tried to follow the guide that was posted but haven't had any luck at all. Does anyone know who to get the phone into s-off by any other way? I would love to be able to use this phone on AT&T.

I can get the program to run and it says that I am now s-off but when I check I am still showing s-on. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. This really has me pulling out my hair.

Thanks
