root status update

I still don't understand what the huge benefit is.

Yes, I have read, and understand what it is. But what's the big deal beyond being able to make some minor changes?

i would suggest doing a manual update and "feeling" the difference.
that makes it worth it to me.
i didnt back anything up cause everything is on googles servers.
i just did my screen savers and change the settings to the way i like, 45min im back 100%!

I was talking about rooting, not the manual update.

I'm confused as to what you're saying here.

Also, I can't do the manual update, because for some reason I can't get HTC Sync to load on my computer.

dude that sucks!
i have win7 on my 64bit machine and htc sync wouldnt work.
but on my 32bit machine it worked!
so...sorry for the confusion but believe me, you WANT root!
imagine having 2.1 on your phone next week!
that can be done once it is rooted :)

How is that possible?

Same here... No one is really making this sound like a must-have, except for saying stuff similar to "OMG THIS IS A MUST"... Ok, that's fine and all, but... why? I'm all about customization, and I consider myself pretty tech savvy, but I'm new to the smartphone scene (Eris is my first one) and like to know more details and advantages. That wiki site was pretty useless, IMO.

:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

OK two questions.....
1. well I be able to ROOT my phone using a Mac (Apple) computer or do you need a PC?
2. by ROOTing the phone well I be able to remove/uninstall some of the apps that Google installs by default like Peep and footprints? I have no idea what they are?

I'm on a Mac, so not HTC Sync for me... and I'm honestly not feeling that bad about it. Contacts and calendar sync to iCal via Google, and I have Salling Media to sync pictures and songs. What am I missing? I'm dual-booting Win XP, so I could install it on that side of my computer if it's really that important.

As for rooting... I think I'll wait until the Eris is really feeling its age and the rooting techniques are more refined, then I shall have G1-esque levels of longevity. I want to get BT functionality right now, but I don't want to deal with getting bug fixes and OS updates all by myself. Maybe I'll feel differently when I see this forum abuzz with people who have rooted and love it.

I'm interested in it to do a couple of things. One, you can save your applications to SD card. I really like the idea of being able to utilize all of that storage. Second you can delete the stock apps that you never use. Some of those those things dont matter to for some people for.others they do.

One quick question: If there was an OTA update from HTC/VZW, how could I get it when my device was rooted? Would I have to wait for a person to make a ROM?

I don't think it only lets me change minor things. I know what it can do. :D I just want to know if I would be able to get OTA updates somehow.

i'm going to try the method out and see what i get seems it's kinda safe cause i'd be using the exe that verizon gave us to update. then post what i find it probably won't be till 1 am est cause i'm running on t mob g1 speeds and have to wait till i get all the peices

but heres the page if you want to follow the progress when everthing started happening

Help finding a way to root the Eris - Page 9 - xda-developers

um the link is not working anymore, i wonder if they got the root to work and closed the thread to keep it secret keep it safe:D fingers crossed.

Me neither, I'm just gonna wait til root gets accessed. There will be easy, step by step instructions when it's rooted.

i love how there's always another forum thats so technical it has it's own group of dedicated members...and they come over to forums like this to give us the news. hahaha. it's great.

always looking forward to root. though i want to get rid of a few stock apps...i'm worried about how tightly they are integrated in to the Sense UI. i don't want to scrap something and then have another app go ape-shit when it can't fill a button area or something.

I suppose I could always go full ****** on it before returning to cover all the evidence.

Verions insurance covers lost/stolen also doesn't it? So if you root it and break something on it just go in and say it was stolen and get it for the deductable.
