Root Root to Tether, then Unroot

Greeting from a newbie,

I found the tutorial on rooting the Huawei Ascend M860 (Cricket) to be thorough and informative. Using your hard fought knowledge I have temp rooted, rooted and unrooted. In the process I have used a number of apps designed for rooted phones. Here is where I stand.

My primary purpose for rooting was to tether. The prospect of ripping out bloatware and applying the obvious advantages of many root-only apps was also very appealing. However, I ran into a problem that I haven't found adequately addressed in these forums. If during my searching and reading, I have missed this topic, then please feel free to delete this thread and direct me to the proper one.

The problem I refer to is that the Huawei Ascend M860 (Cricket) and tethering apps don't play well together. My WiFi toggle is rendered useless and WiFi ceases to function. If anyone else has encountered this problem, please share. I am new to all things Android, though enthusiastically immersed.

My solution to my situation is to follow all the precautions found in your excellent article on rooting the Huawei Ascend M860 such as utilizing Titanium Backup, etc. The end result is that I root only when I absolutely need to tether. As soon as I am finished, I unroot, thereby restoring my ability to toggle WiFi. (Other toggles misbehave too, but not as consistently as the WiFi.)

Thoughts, suggestions, experiences or rants are welcome!

Thanks for listening...

The wifi/tethering problem is a well known issue with the ascend. One possible solution (credit to tokenpoke) is to freeze your tethering app with titanium backup when not using it. This should allow you to use wifi. Unfreeze when needed.

The same thing happens to me and there is no true solution but Tokenspoke has an interesting idea although I didn't try it yet.

freezing only seems to work for some people. i have been messing with it myself, trying to find a solution and freezing seems to work for stock rooted and 2.2 froyo+ but for some reason not icarus....

backing up and deleting worked for all three setups i tried. stock rooted, icarus and froyo+. i'm using barnacle and it doesn't take very long to reinstall with titanium backup so that's probably your best bet.

Hi Toke, Gmash, Lennatron!

Thanks for the feedback. I'm trying to weigh my options. Not an easy proposition for an Android Id10t. Freezing the tether app sounds like a good workaround for the toggle problem. Certainly faster than re-rooting and re-installing every time I need to tether or toggle. Toke, I take it you favor Barnacle. Does it play well with v2.1? I've been using Wireless Tether for Root. Gmash, Lennatron, how about you?

Freezing the tether offers another plus (big plus actually). I get to utilize all of the root apps that make life so much sweeter. This baby needs over-clocking, memory management and control over what loads at boot. Plus I hate the bloat-ware. The Huawei Ascend M860 is like a 90 lb movie star weakling on muscle beach. It has the looks and can play the part, but need a lot of help from trainers, makeup and wardrobe.

Is it true that the integrated graphics on the Ascend M860 is the reason for the camera, et al, malfunctions associated with a 2.2 upgrade? Cricket does not appear to be inclined to offer one; I presume because of the lack of financial incentives. I wonder if there is a way to bring some pressure to bear on Cricket, etc. As I understand it, these ROMs are carrier and hardware specific, true? So where to get a Huawei Ascend M860 specific upgrade?

My final questions (for now :D) is whether an OS upgrade will improve the tether problem as well as some of the other hardware issues associated with rooted phones and apps? Any thoughts? My visit to the Huawei forum wasn't very profitable.

Anyone feel free to join in. Thanks in advance.

there is no need to unroot. it can actually make any app needing su permission fail. you can unroot at any time anyway.

Oh yeah, I totally get that now. It was the tether app, not the rooting of the phone that caused the prob. I was just gun shy because of the other root apps that I had installed. Didn't know which one actually cause the prob. I removed them one at a time and then un-rooted the phone. Since the last app was the tether (my reason for rooting in the first place) I decided to wait till I knew more about root apps, OS upgrades, etc., before proceeding with a permanent strategy. Hence, all the questions. :D

Your workaround is elegant. I will root. I just want to know some stuff. It's easier to organize a game plan when you understand what you are doing. I'm jes ignernt  k? I don't want to be one of these people that just blindly follow directions then freaks out when a problem crops up. I really want to know some of the hows and whys. Can't give back if you don't learn a little something along the way, y'know?

BTW, thanks for your patience. :D I really am just learning my way around this stuff.
