Hello all I am very new to the droid world coming from iphone/pod. Can anyone explane what it means to root the phone? is it anything like jailbreaking? what is the benefit of rooting?

Rooting the phone basically means the same thing as jailbreaking. by passing the OS's permission system to give the user SU (superuser permissions)
this allows applications to do things that otherwise could not have been done... reboot your phone automatically for instance or snap screenshots.
It also allows you to install custom roms
