Root

I have a Galaxy S2 with baseband of I9100xxKE7 and Build XWKF3, what is the easiest way of rooting and what do I need to do it?
I have seen many threads on here with guides but they say to get the right ROM etc and I have no idea which things (programmes and ROMs etc) I need!

ur running KF3 firmware, so go to this link

[17.08.2011][CF-Root v4.1] KE2/7/8, KF1/2/3/4, KG1/2/3/5/6/7, KH1/3 - su+bb+CWM4 - xda-developers

and download the KF3 CF-root kernel. flash it via Odin (all the instructions are provided in the first post), and u should have a rooted phone in 2min :)

if ur interested in flashing a newer firmware first, go here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278

again, instructions are provided in the first post.. u can flash XXKG5 (OXA Poland), the newest official firmware - if u want to flash this new firmware, do it before u root.. then download the KG5 CF-root kernel and flash that instead :)

Excellent, thank you very much. If you haven't guessed I am pretty new to all this rooting business. I have now rooted my phone and think I will leave it as that for now but may eventually decide to flash new roms or kernels (whatever the differecne between them may be!) in the future. I presume I need to unroot the phone before I decide to flash either of these?
Thanks again! Much appreciated!

flashing a new firmware removes root, so u dont have to manually unroot first. just flash a new firmware (i just flashed the new KH3, looking great so far) and then flash the matching CF root kernel (KH3 is already available on CF root) cheers, glad u got it rooted n working already ;)

heshanj, where did you get all the KH3 stuff from? Also, do I just flash KH3 using Odin like I did when I rooted? And then flash the CF root over that?
cheers

KH3 is on the first link i posted. flash it via Odin. that'll remove root. then flash the CF root KH3 kernel (from the second link i posted) both links include guides so follow em carefully if its the first time :)

You are a star!
However, I cant seem to figure out which to do first. I know you said to go to the first link first but all I can find there is the CF Root files. So I have looked on the second link and there appears to be stock 'kernels' there but I don't know which ones to flash first etc. It also states that there is PDA, modem and csc in one package, then it talks about stock kernels and then individual CSC packages and that is where my mind has shrivelled to the size of a nut (a peanut, not even a Brazil nut!!) and I have started to dribble and rock back and forth!
Could you help any more? (you have already helped so much as without you I wouldn't have rooted my phone to begin with so thanks!)

Go here and near the bottom you'll find the KH3 firmware and stock kernel. The KH3 CF-Root kernel package is in this post.

Flash firmware using Odin.
Flash CF-Root kernel using Odin
Flash stock kernel using Odin (to remove warning triangle)
Reflash CF-Root kernel with CWM app to regain full root function
Enjoy! :)

u have to extract the .exe file first and then put it in the PDA slot on Odin.. that should flash the stock kernel back.

then extract the CF root kernel.. u should have a file called zImage.. copy that to ur SD card.. open CWM on u phone, select Flash kernel, on CWM.. and select the zImage that u just copied.. and ur done :D

sorry for the late reply, i think slug has already answered ur questions, hope u got it working now :D plz post if u have any other questions

Many Thanks Slug. Now you just shed a light on all things root. I will proceed will rooting and ROM installation.

Just a question, actually the yellow triangle is not a problem right?

Slug and Heshanj, thanks very much. I have now managed to do it (i think) but I did encounter a problem. After I completed flashing The stock Kernel my SD card wouldn't load, the phone kept saying it was 'damaged'. I put it in my PC and it worked fine. I am going to transfer all the info from the card onto my PC and then reformat the SD card in my phone and then transfer it all back again, hope it works! I can then flash the zimage to re-root it again.
Is this a common issue or am I just very lucky?

I have no idea what has now happened. All was going well until I flashed the zimage of the CF Root file and now the phone wont load up. It goes through the PIN stage and the unlock code stage but then states that applications have stopped unexpectedly and then I have to click 'Force Close' but it is a lot of applications that it does this for. I am assuming that I just go back and flash all the files again (I'll probably leave the flashing of the zImage file, that yellow triangle doesnt bother me much anyway!)

I have reflashed with the Stock and then CF Root but I lost all my programs etc. I have redownloaded some but even though the phone now does start up none of the apps are working, they keep stating that there has been a problem and I have to force close them! Any ideas how to get them working again?

In the end I had to reset the phone to factory settings (which obviously lost everything on the phone which is annoying). I have double checked the CF Root and it is the right one so I am not sure what happened. After resetting the phone the firmware has stayed as KH3 and it is quite good to be fair, a few slight changes (auto correct when typing seems to be better!). It is no longer rooted but I'm sure I'll get around to doing it again soon.
Cheers for all your help.
