Root Rooted Droid X no Wifi tether WTF?

Ok so I have been with Sprint and have never had trouble using Open Garden or such once my epics have been rooted so forgive me for my newbness here with the droid X..... I am trying to root my fathers Droid X strictly for WiFi tether and after rooting it Open Garden does not work and neither does the Wifi tether app did Verizon find a way to block this or am I doing something wrong? Is there any easy way around it?

Tethering Illegally is not tolerated by verizon's TOS, here is the link for more info

if you wish to tether your dads phone you need to purchase the verizon plan in order to do it.
