I am hoping to get good speeds from my Evo 4G through Wifi Tether to my wifi only "New Ipad." We only have 3g here and I get about 3 or 4 bars where I am trying this. My Ipad connects but is very very slow (0-50Kbps) I will give you the full details of my Evo and what I have done with it to make understanding the issue easier. Its an 1+ year old Evo, and I kept it stock till just after the most recent ota update. (Doh!)
I rooted it with my macbook using the htcdev method using this guide:
How to Root HTC Evo 4G on HBOOT 2.18 with S-OFF! | HTC Evo 4G Hacks!
(HTCdev method means I have S-on still, how does that affect me?)
First I installed clockwork for recovery and made a nandroid then flashed the "MikG" rom and thought it was cool. Tried Wifi Tether app at this point to no avail. I tried downloading an older Wifi Tether app and installed from sd. Still nothing.
I flashed back to my nandroid's recovery state (before using MikG) and uninstalled clockwork and Wifi Tether.
I installed "amon ra" using the PC36IMG method found in "Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide."
I backed up a nandroid and installed Wifi Tether. After turning on "Routing Fix," I was able to get my Ipad to connect to it. It brough up the first page fairly quickly and then went almost completely dead (0.0-50.0Kbps) and from several trials: it will stay that slow permanently. I tried to connect to my macbook and got the same very slow speeds.
location:
My experiences trying this so far have been limited to my college apartment where there are very many other wireless networks in range as well as mine (interference possible). This is not where I plan to use this feature so I wouldn't mind if the abundant networks is the problem. I will experiment with it while riding the bus tomorrow.
