Root Rooted for dummies

OK I upgraded my X to Froyo weds. I would like to root and tether without another fist up my (*&^(*.

I have never done anything like this. Any suggestions to read and what do I need to do? I just don't want to brick my phone.

I did this yesterday and it worked fine. I placed the contents of the zip file in the Tools folder of the Android SDK folder and I cut and pasted the commands in the instructions into the console and it worked great.
