Root Rooted my Commando

Hi Spike, will have I got one for the books for you. I downloaded a program for what was then Android Market, which is now called Google Market Play, or something very close to that title. I do not know for sure exactly what caused my phone to crash, but all hell broke loose. I lost everything, except the ability to call, other than that everything else went to hell in a hand basket. No system files, No applications, No files on the sdcard. I had made 2 backups but could not load them to the phone no matter what, I tried. Here is the something strange, on cell phone it showed no files on the sdcard; however, when I linked the cell up to the PC it showed all my files that I had backed up on the sdcard, figure that one out. Could not even do a reinstall. The computer world can be a strange one indeed. If you can come up with any ideas, I sure would be thankful for your help in the crazy matter.

Geez, What program did you install?

If you had/have usb debugging on, you could try going adb shell, going to the /data/app folder, find the last app you installed, exit out of adb shell abd try adb uninstall appname

The had part is what is no more. I had linked the PC to the cell phone without the sdcard in hopeing that the PC could find the cpu in the cell phone, and it did not, if only it could have I might had had a chance in doing something, but that does not look like that is going to happen. I will say this, this incident will not happen again, that you can be sure of. Had I had downloaded to the PC first and checked the file for MalWare I do not believe this would had not happen. There is an old saying hast makes waste, and brother is that ever the truth. Will I will be getting another phone, and doubt it most likely be upgraded to a m100 from the m80 verison. Naturally I will not be able to root it, but that is life. Before I forget thank you for the helping me; however, that idea is not going to work, but thanks again, Paxchristos. Have a good day.

Jeeze, thats one hell of a problem! so you downloaded the app to your computer first? but it came from the google market?! seems fishy that an app from the market could cause such damage. Have you tried pulling the battery and taking the sd card out and reinserting everthing? its a long shot but it might do some thing. Also if worst comes to worst and you're on the verge of getting a new phone, you can always try
Code:
adb shell
#wipe data
If you manage to connect to the computer

Best of luck.

This is what I think happened, however, I am not sure. I saw a program that I wanted to download, it had to due with the sdcard reader speed. My big mistake was downing loading from my phone instead of the PC to get the program in question. I have a extremely good Anti-Malware program in my computer plus a few other things that would have raised a red flag, as one might say. Secondly, I did not have a virus program in the cell phone as I should have, and appearently where I had downloaded from was not the real site, but bogis site that looked like the real thing, but was not. In the process of the downloading, I went and got some milk and came back to the room where I had the cell phone. Of course, I had sent my screen to go off in 1 or 2 minutes, when I returned, I turned my screen back on it appeared things where ok, at least that is what I thought at the time. I turned it off for the night, and the next day turned it on the next day, and then that is when there was nothing in my phone, everthing was totally gone, not good. I was angry to say the least. I think the fake program though it appeared to come from Google Market but actually did not, and I got some type of Malware, or what ever and caused my phone to go blank. I say this, nex time I will have some type of malware program in my cell phne.. I was warned some time ago that things like this can happen, though it be rare. I hate to admit it, but, I was not careful, and that would be the understatement of the day. I will be getting a used phone, that was a demo from verzion, Wedensday.

I also had V6supercharger, 3GT scripts installed long before this incident, but could not get the KaK script to install kept saying permission denied.

Well, no doubt this cell phone that I will receive tomorrow, will not be able to root it, because I think it will probably, most likely, be upgraded from a M80 to a M100 verison up grade.

Just a few little things:
1) Did you ever allow this program to run (i.e. superuser asked for access?)
2) If you could, please figure out what the name of the app was, I'm really curious and would like to do some testing (I have a phone (My Xperia Play) with an unlocked bootloader, I really don't think I can brick it... (Haven't yet, atleast))
3) It seriously sound like your launcher was messed with. There is a thread around here talking about replacing the launcher through adb, have you tried that?
4)Google Market/Play Store is pretty bulletproof in terms of where it downloads from. If the app is still in the store, then double check it (please). Google, while not being as tough on apps as apple, has been know to remove stuff once it gets way too many hits for errors. (Have you tried emailing the dev's behind the app/seen reviews on their other apps)
5) Also, do you remember what type of permissions the offending app needed?

Note: Anti-virus is hit or miss (check this link: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/03/07/android_anti_malware_tests/ ) and my guess is that it most likely would have missed this (if it is a virus, which I doubt (too much work to do a virus for linux, much easier to ask for permissions, and leech stuff away) )

Pax

Pax, I did not see any permissions, but at 2:00 AM in the morning I was not exactly wide awake. I did not have the Google Market on my cell phone, but the old program Android Market. In order to download the Google Market I had to find a web site that offered that upgrade, which I thought was a good site. I found it, or should I say it found me. I had typed Google Market in the search mode on the phone and found several things about it, but did find one that I scrolled to, and it had had blue numbers relating to Google Market so I clicked on the numbers as it asked. Not ever seeing the Google Market Screen I thought it was a real website, the screen came up after it down loaded, but I thought it was a little odd, because it had a lock symbol attached to it to this site. The site had a very low number like at 3.4, but I figured being new it would take awhile for the score to go up, on the reviews. I did have to hit the button screen to activate the Google Market. I decided tomorrow I would go back and download the cdboost reader program, well you know the rest.

I did call Verizon the next day, Tuesday, and told them what happened. I said I had a complete backup on my sdcard but could not get the files to my phone, but to my surprise they could bring the complete backup to my phone from the sdcard thru my email address, but in my case they could not because what ever files they use was gone on my cell phone. They actually named my files that I had backed up to verify those where indeed my files from my sdcard. There is a lot more things that they can do, I guess if the need arises. Just what that might be is anyones guess.

Pax, I just looked at the web site on my PC for play google, and it was nonething like the screen that came up in my cell phone, yesterday. Boy did I ever get hit on that one. No lock sysmbol and no button to click on play google like there was for the fake site that came up on the cell phone.

Pax I have a question for you, if I may. Being that my file backup has got the root entire program in it, will I be able to use the old sdcard, or will I have to buy a new one. Verizon told me that I have to remove the old sdcard, battery, and the back cover before I can ship the old phone back to them. Their reason was the new phone will have none of these items that I just mentioned.

I am thinking when I get the phone tomorrow, I will just put in the battery and not the sdcard at first, inorder to find what verison it has, m80 or m100, if m100 I probably should buy another sdcard, so there in no conflict between the sdcard and the m100 upgrade. What would your take on this be

I'll chime in if thats ok. First thing, the app you downloaded was designed for root users to modify the sd read/write speeds, correct? It *MAY* not be malicious, there are several advanced apps that are for modifying variables like this and some are a bit dangerous to use if you arent familliar with them completely, there is a SLIGHT chance that you clicked a wrong button or entered a variable that screwed things up. However this is just a guess, as i have fooled around with such apps and there is a disclaimer for this. Your problem however seems much deeper than that but i figured it was worth mentioning in case anyone else has a similar problem. This app seems to need root privleges to run so you might be ok running it on a non rooted phone, but thats up to you. personally i'd plug it into my computer and format it so its clean, or if you dont want to risk a computer infection as well, just buy a new one.

I will be doing just that, Spike, and thank for taking your valuable time in reading my post, and for helping me as much as you did. You are a good person.

I work with the American Red Cross and travel in many places in my 10 years and have come across many people of all kinds. I would have to say that you and Pax are good people, and thank you again for your help.

Got it! Duh... Uzipped the Batch file with out the "files" folder

Thanks pax!

edit: Now I'm getting an error from Titanium Backup saying that it could not acquire root privileges

Nevermind again, simply updated superuser

Totally new to smartphones / rooting etc. No clue what I'm doing here. Did the root from pax that was the all-in-one zip file and it seemed to work. Downloaded titanium backup and superuser and I am getting the error from Titanium saying can't acquire root priveleges. Any ideas?

But hey, you can find a razr maxx or galaxy nexus for about 300 bucks used.

I'll trade durability for functionality any day.

Ok, it's 2013 and i've had this phone since aug 2012. It is the commando 2.3.3. I'm trying the superoneclick but it just keeps getting stuck saying "waiting on device" is there anything I can do to get this to work? is it even possible? i've tried it in charge only mode, synch, and mass storage, and with the SD card in and out. still the same thing. would love to root this thing finally, but at the point of giving up right now. thanks for any help.

hello ryan!
I don't know how long you have been away from the forums, but as of 8 months ago there are two new ways to root the phone. However, as the phone is 2.3.3, what firmware is it? M130?

ok great! your device is compatable with both of the new rooting methods:

the first one that came out was by tommytopdrive. It is the more difficult one and has had less success, plus some people have the wifi break. Things to note about this exploit:
you need this version of ES file explorer for the .sh file to edit properly.
check to make sure that your wifi is off during this process.

the other one is easier and comes with a video on youtube on how to root AND install the recovery and boot image to better protect your phone. something to note about this one is the link to the "m130 root kit update" page to get the latest boot.img.
