Root Rooted/Non-update/Update notification question

OcalaFlGuy

I am on 4.4.3 and prefer to stay that way. Things are Just As I like them now. EXCEPT for the incessant System Update Notification.

I am rooted with the Stock Rom. I rooted with the Wugs tool kit and that's about the extent of my abilities.

I was told in MetroPCS-ville that I can do the OTA, it will fail, but the notification will also go away.

Is this true?

Is it close to a Sure Thing that IF this works I Can't mess anything up doing it?

Much Thanks in advance,

Bruce in Ocala, Fl

Hey Bruce :wavey:!

I've moved your thread to the N4 all-things-root area for you.

I believe that if you go into Settings -> Apps -> All tab -> Google Services Framework and de-select the "Show notifications" item that will make the notifications stop.

Of course, I'm pretty sure that the Framework app does a lot more than just check for system updates, so you might be turning off notifications for other things.

The above obviously doesn't require root, but the root folks in here might have an idea or two that you could try (on some devices, there's a system update app that can be frozen / disabled that will accomplish what you want, but I'm not sure if that's true on the N4).

Best of luck! :)

edit: update...a little further research shows that the above might not be the total solution...but have a look at this post over on AC: http://forums.androidcentral.com/search.php?do=process&userid=880258&contenttype=vBForum_Post&searchthreadid=225544&starteronly=1 for an alternative option.

As always, be careful with root-related things...a Nandroid backup is your best friend  :).

I know the feeling...

However, in this case you may want to reconsider; the update didn't break anything I could see.

Understood :-)

It is not true. The OTA will work perfectly if you really have a rooted but unmodified stock ROM. It will however lose root, which you can re-enable using Wugs or (better!) avoid losing root at all by using Scary Alien's handy Root Toolkit app immediately before taking the OTA.

In any event if it fails (for whatever reason) the notification will return eventually (often days later) to nag you. A failed OTA is not a viable solution.
