Root Rooted Nook Color with B&N Software Version 1.1.0

birdyard

Newbie
After researching the vast worldy widey webby and getting to the end of the tinternet, my brain has refused to absorb any more Nook Color rooting information :(

I rooted my NC just a year ago after it received an OTA update to software version 1.1.0. Unfortunately for me, I didn't have time to keep up with the fast paced changes occurring with root "updates" due to work constraints, and OTA software updates from B&N had been changed to manual.

A year later, I'm able to find time to update my NC. But, I'm at a crossroads in that I can't find any info to update from 1.1.0 and the root which came out at that time. Do I need to start from the very beginning with 1.0 or is there some magicky way of having a rooted NC with all the latest and greatest hits as of March 2012?

Could a kind soul please point me in the right direction (I know how to read maps but not GPS :D) of achieving rooted NC gloriousness - my brain will heap gratitudes aplenty upon you, and I promise (on my maiden's honour) that I will be more vigilant in keeping up with NC appearances.

It's easy, just flash one of the several back to stock images (maybe 1.3 would be good) from the roms and root stick in the root section, then get the 1.4.2 OTA update.

Then root it with Bobstro's guide, also stickied in the root section.

That assumes you don't want to go to CM7.1 stable, which you don't have to worry about an update. You could use the Quick'n Dirty update via Rom Manager (make sure you wipe data and create a backup). This would be a LOT easier. :D

Thanks so much for your response colchiro :)

Does it matter which card I use, as in just a plain old micro sd card or a micro sdhc card?

I'd use a cheap Sandisk 1 or 2 gb card and put it in a safe place when done. Save your good cards for data.

BTW, the fastest cards for Android are the Sandisk class 2 or class 4.

Hi colchiro - made the sd card but when I went into the links posted for the 1.3 update, the site no longer exists (multiupload).

Soooo ... would you be willing to suggest an easy alternative root, please and thank you. I'm not bothered about all the B&N stuff and am more than happy to give the NC a new lease of life as a fully fledged Android tablet.

Here's a back to stock for 1.3: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16939153/NookColor/update-nc-stock-1.3.zip

Of course that requires a bootable sdcard and following a guide.

Otherwise, this is still the easiest way to install CM7, if you don't need the B&N specific reader functions:

If you use the B&N update files, you can go straight to 1.4.2 from any prior version. They pretty much stomp on everything, so there's no incremental process. Of course, be sure to back up anything you care about before doing so.

Once you get to 1.4.2, just root away per the guide and have fun!

Thanks for the info bobstro - I think I will be having some fun and, quite possibly, many "tearing my hair out" sesheez LOL

Hey birdyard, could you post a step by step of how you achieved your root success with your previously rooted NC. I am in the exact same spot you were in. I have a 1.1.0 rooted NC that I rooted for my wife (why does that sound fun) a year ago. We just gave it to my 8 year old son and I want to update it to the latest and greatest root. Since you are now the old rooted NC new root guru I bow to your wisdom!

Do you want to upgrade the B&N firmware? If so, just download the 1.4.2 update and copy it to the MyNOOKcolor folder that opens when you connect it to your PC. Unplug, let it go to sleep and it should update.

Once you've done that, you can easily root with manualnooter.

I guess I need to do more research but I just want to go from a rooted 1.1.0 to the latest root as easy as possible (or course :D ).

If you want to keep the B&N firmware, then you will want to update to B&N 1.4.2, then run manualnooter on that. If you want to run CyanogenMod or some other ROM instead of B&N, the procedure is different.

I guess I need to research what exactly what I want to do. Since it's out of warrenty I'll probably lean towards a different ROM. I'm thinking the ICS setup right now since I have a Transformer Prime running ICS and my son knows that pretty good. I guess I'll do some more research to figure out exactly what I want. Be ready for some more questions.

CM7 or a rom based on it (like Mirage) is going to be pretty stable.

CM9 (ICS) is going to be less stable and more likely to have things broken. If you go with CM9, every couple weeks, I'd make a backup and update to a newer nighty.

LOL theandies - I wouldn't call myself a guru exactly and I couldn't have done it without colchiro's and bobstro's guidance. The steps I took are as follows:

1 - I made a bootable CWM recovery sd card following this link - http://androidforums.com/nookcolor-...od-recovery-twrp-version-3-2-0-1-sd-card.html

2 - Next, I burned another sd card with the link that colchiro provided in Post #6 above just in case I messed up anywhere along the way and could return to a B&N stock software version, which came up as 1.2 (not 1.3) on Device Info on my NC - the steps are in this link which I followed in the first post from "Formatting Data" onwards http://androidforums.com/nookcolor-...uide-how-restore-your-nc-stock-b-n-1-3-a.html

3 - I decided that CM7 would be the best way for me to go and followed colchiro's first post in this link - http://androidforums.com/nookcolor-all-things-root/352736-guide-how-install-cm7-your-nook-color.html

4 - I downloaded the files in the "quote box" Downloading the required files: As of the time of this post, the latest stable build is 7.1.0, and the latest gApps is 20110828 to my computer and followed the directions in Section 3

That's it!!!

If my above ramblings are not quite coherent please let me know and I will try and be more eloquent in future ramblings :D

Thanks for your step-by-step!!!!

I'm still on the fence to do this. If I brick his NC (now that it's his) I'll have a very dissappointed 8 year old. He loves his "new" NC.

I started there, but found that 7.2 Mirage makes everything smoother and avoids the Sleep of Death problem I was having...
