I've tried quite a few apps so far, but no dice in getting the tether to work properly.

Root Rooted OE tether app?

I been running WiFi Tether for Root Users since I rooted my Elite and it works just fine although others have reported it doesn't. If you haven't tried it I'd give it a try and see
I also had trouble getting Wifi Tether for Root Users working when I tested it a few times, but I will mention that I had a poor data signal when/where I tried it. Using Barnacle Wifi Tether under the same conditions worked well for me, so I'd recommend trying that. Barnacle only provides WEP.

pdanet works well for usb tethering. not sure about wireless. havent tried anything yet.
