Root Rooted, ROM'd, oops!

Hi guys,

Firstly, sorry to bring up an issue that is quite common, I have gone through the forums and with me being new to this (yes ok, I'm a noob!) I really can't make heads nor tails of it all!

Basically, for the sake of trying to take screen shots on my phone I rooted it but have encountered a problem!

I have a HTC Desire HD, and I found a programme called AAHK that I ran after reading the manual and rooted the phone twice as recommended, all fine so far! I was back to android 2.3.3 I think and it was suggested that I flash a ROM.

The rom I chose was Cibernodo Mod2Bravo V7.1 (English version) . . . I put the zip file on to my SD card . . . restarted in recovery mode, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, wipe Dalvik cache, wipe battery stats, install zip from SD card, chosen the Cibernodo file and gone through the installation process . . . . but it kept coming up with the same result:

Mounting and formatted partitions
Mounting /data
Mounting /sd-ext
Formatting /system
Mounting /system
Intalling System & Data partitions
Installing Gingerbread Keyboard
Installing Zeam Launcher
Installing ES File Manager
Installing CM/GB player
Installing 3DGallery
Removing Apps NOT selected
Installing Cibernodo Bootanimation

Configuring installed files
Setting permissions of /data
Configuring System Files

assert failed: write_raw_image("/tmp/boot.img","boot")

I downloaded the ROM again and also tried earlier versions but the same message came up, even after the installation process said it had all worked.

So, because the busy box and super user stuff had now disappeared, I ran the AAHK again to get back to square one. During this process, my internet had a 'blip' and the process stopped, and thinking I was protecting the phone, I disconnected it, which I have now learned is a silly thing to do!!

Now, my phone will switch on but will only stay at the HTC screen and go no further. I can boot into the HBOOT menu by pressing volume down and power but I dont know what to do from here.

I have tried to run the AAHK again but it presents with the 'error, error, error' message . . . phone not connected (which it is), drivers not installed (which they are), or phone USB debugging disabled (I don't know how to determine this), so no joy there. I have also tried this with a different SD card and it will initiate the process but states that the card may be corrupt ...

I have spoken to a couple of people who have said that the phone isn't necesarrily 'bricked' and that it can be salvaged, but I just don't know how to get there.

So any advice will be huuuuugly appreciated! And I know it was silly to try to do something that I am unsure of, but we all start somewhere.

Many thanks in advance ...

Well, this is the Desire, not Desire HD forum, so I'll move it to there since the rooting procedure isn't the same.

I don't understand you needing to root it twice... as far as I have read, it is not a good idea to run the AAHK more than once on a phone.

Can you still boot in to recovery (turn on whilst holding the volume down button - keep holding it until after it has vibrated a couple of times)?

I did as was suggested in the 'effen' manual, hence doing it twice.

And yes, I can boot into recovery . . . but it doesn't vibrate at all.

That boots me into the AAHK menu, and there is an option to go into recovery, but if I select recovery it shows me a black screen with a picture of a phone with a warning triangle and '!', volume up and power then sends me to 'Android system recovery <3e>'

On that screen there is still a picture of a phone with the red triangle, and further down, in yellow, the message

'E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command'

OK... if you can boot in to recovery (ClockWorkMod), then I don't think that there should be a problem.

I hadn't actually heard of the ROM that you mentioned... a quick search for it online shows that it is a Desire ROM, not a Desire HD ROM - this is why it will not work.

If you head to http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-...hings-root-guide-updated-2nd-june-2012-a.html you will see a list of DHD ROM's that you can choose from. You can either go for a Sense based ROM (similar to the stock HTC stuff) or a Vanilla Android ROM (Android as Google ship on the Nexus phones) - I would perform wipes and then flash any one of those :)

Sorry for being such a noob . . . when you say perform wipes, I take it you mean 'wipe data/factory reset' and 'wipe cache partition'?

And I am having a quick look on the thread you sent too . . . many thanks

And thanks for the heads up on that ROM, that will be why!!

Ok, I have done the wipes, but my pc doesnt recognise my phone at all so I can't put a ROM on to flash . . . does that mean I will need a new SD card?

A full wipe would be to wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache, and then you can flash a new rom :)

Hi CDPlant, thank you for that, the only problem is that I can't get into that menu, only into the android recovery menu from the AAHK screen . . . ultimately it sends me back to the HTC screen and my pc won't see the phone for me to access the SD card to put another ROM on there.

Weel, I have tried but nothing seems to work at all . . . the only thing I can norrow it down to now is the SD card! I have tried an old card that I have kept from a previous phone, both the AAHK and the Amaze all in one kits then start their processes (whereas in my original SD card nothing starts, bar error messages), but stops saying that the SD card may be corrupt or incorrectly mounted!

I guess this means at least I have something that I 'CAN' actually do lol, but this will have to wait until tomorrow now . . . thank you to those who have replied and for being patient . . .

Having had a quick look at the hack kit, I see what you meant about running it twice... it hasn't actually run twice (the first time round, it downgrades and the second it actually roots the phone... this is what had confused me - I rooted a mates phone about 3 weeks ago and only had to run the kit, not downgrade and then root). Don't run the AAHK again, as far as I can remember, running it on a rooted phone can cause issues.

In the "efin manual" I see that, in some cases, it can corrupt the SD card and, with what you have said about trying a different SD card, it does sound like yours could be corrupt.

When you have said that you can boot in to recovery, do you mean it boots in to ClockWorkMod... this is a custom recovery where you would have several options - "Restore/Backup, Install Zip from SD Card, Wipe/Factory reset, etc."? I believe it says "ClockWorkMod 5.X.X" at the top.

Have PM'd another staffer about your issue... could you let us know if your phone says "S-Off" or "Ship S-Off" or something like that when you reboot and get to the AAHK screen?

Hi D-U-R-X,

When I press volume down and power the AAHK screen comes up, and this is what it shows:

*****AAHK*****
ACE PVT ENG S-OFF RL
HBOOT-0.85.2425
MICROP-0438
RADIO-26.03.02.26_M
eMMC-boot
Apr 12 2011,00:55:45

HBOOT

volume controls then options for fastboot, recovery, factory reset, simlock, image crc

If I then select the 'recovery' option it goes to a black screen with a phone in the middle superimposed with a red triangle and '!'

Press volume up and power and that takes me to:

Android system recovery <3e>

Use volume key to highlight;
click power key to select

Reboot system now
Apply sdcard:update.zip
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition

And that is about as much as the phone does . . . when I plug it in to the pc it shows that it is trying to download drivers etc but then if I go into 'my computer' there is no sign of the phone . . .

This is as much detail that I can give, but I hope it helps shed light on the issue, and thank you very much for being helpful.

Following the discussion I mentioned (and as your phone is S-OFF), I think what you will need to do is run the Sense 3.0 RUU... this should put your phone back to stock, unbranded, HTC firmware (exactly how it would be if you bought it direct from HTC) and then look to use the hack kit again to root (if you still want to go down the root direction).

Hang fire though... I will see if I can't get confirmation for you.

basically what we need to do is:
1)run an ruu to get back to a working phone
2)reroot via the AAHK again,or via installing a recovery

ive found a couple RUUs that match your radio, this one i believe is unbranded:
Shipped ROMs

go ahead and start downloading, but some more info may help us. first download this small file:
mini-adb.zip

-unzip it,and place the unzipped folder onto the root of your C drive(not inside a folder)

-open a cmd window(with win 7,click start bubble, type "command" or "cmd" in hte search box)

-now change to your mini-adb directory(assuming you didnt chagne the name). type in the black cmd window that opened on your PC:
cd c:\mini-adb

-now plug in your phone, power on into hboot, and select "fastboot" with the vol rocker/power button

-in your cmd window type:
fastboot devices

it should output your phones serial number. if so youre good to go. if not, youre apparently having a driver issue. i usually recomend these drivers from Revolutionary : modified htc drivers download and install the drivers(you should just have to run that file). afterwards, unplug your phone, plug it back in. make sure its in fastboot. as soon as you get a result from "fastboot devices" your ready to procede to the next step.

-in your cmd window, type(or copy/paste,is much easier):
fastboot getvar all

-copy the info that outputs here. right click in your cmd window, click mark, highlight it all in white. hit enter. paste the info here. it will help us know which ruu for you to run. :)

-in your cmd window:
fastboot oem ?

paste that info here as well :)

holler if you have questions. im at work from 10-6:30,but ill try and watch if you have a question that D-U-R-X is unsure of the the answer to :)

Hi D-U-R-X AND Scotty85,

Thanks mate, that sounds awesome! I have some work to finish off but I will get on that later tonight and fingers crossed it will work. If it does, I will stick to the basic phone lol, and maybe in time, after rading around a bit more I may try again in the furure!

Thank you for being so helpful and patient!

And I have just thought, will that also work if I have damaged my SD card?

yes the commands i have listed are not dependent on an sd card even being present.

once we figure out the right ruu for you to run,it usually will be a .exe file wich is run on your PC with the phone plugged in. it,too,is not dependent on the sd card.

in a worse case scenario,if you need to run some sort of PD98IMG,there is a way we can run that from fastboot, leaving your sd out of the equTION as well. :)
