rooting a S2 from linux/ubuntu?

hooly

Newbie
first off, n00b alert: i know my way around your average PC but the SGS2 is my first smartphone.
second, i have searched, found nothing conclusive.

so the question is: is it possible to root my S2 (GT-i9100P,BVKI3) from linux -- in my case it's Ubuntu 11.10 -- and if so what's the (reliable) procedure?

i do have a old WinXP box and i am aware that there are heaps of ways to root from Windows but unfortunately they mostly seem to rely on Kies+Odin and Kies won't install on my win box. The .NET update fails and since i'm about to ditch the thing anyway i'd rather not burn a bunch of time on it (if i can possibly avoid it). hence my desire to do it from my new work environment, Ubuntu.

a few solid leads would be much appreciated. thank you.

If you get any response to this could you pm me please.
haven't checked recently but you might find something over on xda.
I must get round to checking with mad P over on LINUX UK.

I'm a n00b too as far as Andriod is concerned. Have been using ubuntu for a few years now.

I have not been successful with it but I know that Heimdall is the Linux equivalent of Odin in that you can flash Samsung Galaxy S2's with it.

Something to try:

Install wine (windows emulator) on Ubuntu, then try running Odin though wine. I don't know if this will work because of lack of drivers etc but got to be worth a try.

Another option would be using an app to root phone (z4root springs to mind but not 100% sure), then using cwm app to flash anything else. Once rooted you can pretty much do whatever you like!

It has been at least a year since I ran Ubuntu as my main machine, and at least two since I had an Android connected to it so don't know how much help the above will be, but thought it might be a start at least.

Oh, third option, if you have a windows disc why not install it as a virtual machine on your Linux setup, and run it ask through that?

unfortunately nothing i've heard so far sounds much like "proven and reliable" to me, no offence intended. the bleeding edge is not really where i want to be with this. the quest continues i guess.

recently stumbled across this, sounds very promising indeed:

How to root the Samsung Galaxy SII using CF-ROOT (included instructions for Heimdall/Linux).

basically a brief description of how to do the deed using Heimdall and Chainfire's rooted kernels. easy-peasy if the description is to be believed, though in digging through the comments on various posts at freeyourandroid.com (the link above) it does sound like the guy follows a "post first and deal with the problems later" policy. just saying, no offence intended.
