Root Rooting and Disk Space

I am becoming exasperated at the amount of space I have.

I don't consider that I have a lot of apps, I just have the ones I use, but I'm hovering around the 20MB internal storage level, so every time an update comes along I get the low space message.

I've used the SDK thingy to set the SD card as the default location for apps.

If I root, will the SD card be considered as part of the storage or will I still get the low storage message?

So, if I've read it correctly, my SD card will be set to hold 512MB of internal storage and it will be still be available when it's set to hard disk mode?

Even if I'm wrong, there will be less data on it as the flashed ROM won't have the O2 stuff anymore?

Well you can set the ext partition to be bigger than 512 but internal memory (the /data partition) will still be used for some things. As this still goes down, it limits the usability of the ext partition. Personally I have 1GB partition with 117 apps and plenty of space left on the ext.

Flashing a non o2 Rom won't save space because the ROM and It's apps are on the /system partition, which as default cannot be re-used by you for "internal storage".

There are ways to change the internal partitions so /system is smaller giving more space to /data but these are a bit more involved so they're for more advanced rooters. Often this is used as an alternative to a2sd but I use both in conjunction with each other.

Ok, so if I set a partition of 1GB, that will all be on the SD and will allow me to have increased apps as I will also have the internal storage?

How it works is a script moves part of the app to the ext partition. Having even 512 will increase the amount of apps. Because it moves part to ext, (still leaving some internal) you can have twice as many apps, if not more.

You probably wont have a need for 1GB, but if you set 1GB, its future proof incase you do something in the future that means you can utilise it.

If you have a big SD card, 1GB is great. If not, 512 should be sufficient.
