Root Rooting and unlocking the bootloader on Nexus 7

Hey, I never owned any of the Nexus before. I never own the Nexus smartphone or even the Nexus tablet before. I currently have the Galaxy S3 from Verizon Wireless.

However, the other night I had ordered the Nexus 7 tablet from Verizon Wireless, and its on backorder until 6/23/14, and thats like a few months from now.

I would like to ask if the Nexus 7 could be rooted and could the bootloader be unlocked? If it could than may someone please post a link to a guide/tutorial and/or a YouTube video?

Yes, it can absolutely be unlocked and rooted. That's one of the staples of the nexus brand.

The root steps are nearly identical for each nexus device, and you'll find instructions in the stickies at the top of the forum

I'm sorry but the steps are making it hard for me to understand.

1. Select the correct device and build (what you are currently running)
2. Configure your drivers if you haven’t already using the driver guide (If you aren’t sure use Step 3 of the driver guide to test your drivers).
3. If you need to, backup your important data.
4. Unlock your device
5. Root your device
6. Enjoy! ^_^

I understand that and most importantly the steps are not missing. About what I wrote is pretty much swipe to unlock, reboot, and enjoy, but where are the instructions to root it? That what made it hard for me to understand.

Thank you so much! Like I said its on backorder until 06/23/2014, so I am asking questions now so I know what to expect

It basically consists of 3 steps:

1) Unlock the bootloader

2) Flash a custom recovery

3) Flash either a custom rooted rom or the superuser files needed to get root

You can either do them manually (my preferred way), or using an automated tool such as wugs toolkit linked above.

I orginally wrote this guide for the nexus 5, but have changed the recovery links to work with the nexus 7 as well.

If you use it, let me know how it worked . You shouldnt have any issues, but I'll be glad to hear some feedback.
