Root Rooting and unlocking

Hi guys,

I have just sold my Desire on eBay and the buyer received it today. It is Orange branded, however it was rooted and I was running MIUI. But before I sold it I flashed a rooted version of stock Froyo.
But the buyer has got it today and an O2 sim would not work and was locked to Orange. Does rooting not unlock a Desire?
If someone could clarify this for me please that would be grand.

No, the SIM lock is something different.

But unlocking the desire for free is not hard now - I can't really search ATM but I'm sure someone will post the link soon.

Mine came unlocked, so I've not used this myself. If it works thank dannylill1981, whose post I got this from.
