Rooting and Updating...

Hi everyone,

I am soon going to get a Tab 10.1, and am planning on rooting it just for SixAxis. Is this considered custom firmware, or when I root it is it custom firmware? I'm going to update to the highest firmware as the first thing I do, but when ICS/ a newer version of Honeycomb comes out, will I need to de-root first to update?

PS: I know that there are other topics on this, but they mentioned custom firmware, but I didn't know if this was.

Thanks!

Hi, rooting means you are gaining super administrative rights on your phone. Updating or "flashing" means you are actually changing the firmware for new firmware.

+1 to this ^^

Also, take care before you install the latest firmware, rooting is achieved by taking advantage of some sort of exploit in a firmware.

When an update is released, the exploit that was used in the lower firmware version is most likely sealed up. This means that what ever you used to root ver. 1.2, probably won't work on ver 1.3. Sometimes this isn't that big of a deal, because a new exploit is found quickly. Unfortunately, this is not always true, and a new exploit might take awhile to be discovered.

I would suggest you take a look at the sub forum for you device, before you start updating anything.
