Rooting Android phone

Hi friends,

I got Samsung Galaxy ACE with Android 2.3
I want to know what are the risks are rooting? Will it void the phone warranty?

On a side note, since the Ace is not a super phone, it may be wise to look up lightweight roms for the Ace to increase performance.

What do you mean by Lightweight ROMs? Does by rooting we can do any hardware changes like Update ROM or something like that?
I dont have any idea about these stuffs, can you please point me to some tutorial or Article which explains these things, It'll be greatfull
