Can someone please post a link on how exactly to root and put either ICS or Cynogenmod on my Sprint HTC Evo 4G. I have googled and found lots of sites that explain how to do it but a lot of them have comments and complaints at the bottom of upset people saying that it doesn't work or that's for another phone and stuff like that. I dont want to just pick a site and go with it and brick my phone. Please only links that you know for sure that work for my phone. Thank you.

By the way, my phone has Android 2.3.3 and it is not rooted or anything, completely stock.

Thanks

Welcome to AF!!!!!!!
We have a dedicated root forum:EVO 4G - All Things Root - Android Forums

Here is the guide you want:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

Once rooted then we can go over roms to flash.

I start to root my phone. I used HTCdev method, and stopped and at "congrats!!!!!! you have just installed amon ra 2.3" in the Fastboot method. I'm not rooted yet, am I? Do i need to root first then, flash ROM, or can I continue to flash ROM where I am now?

I'm not sure what ROM to use.
I'm looking at http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html where it says Staff Picks, #1. What do you think about this one?

I read throught the page and it says this:
1) Download rom to sd and verify md5
2) Full wipe when coming from another rom or version upgrade.
3) Flash 500
4) Flash Gapps
5) Reboot

Im not sure how to do the steps, can someone help with this?

It you have installed recovery the you are rooted. The first thing to do will be to go into recovery and select backup/restore and make a backup of the stock rom. If I remember the first three are already checked and I'd also check wimax. After you've completed the backup move down to wipe and select Superwipe. Once this is done move to the flash zip selection and install the rom followed by the gapps.

This will get you started and we'll help you with any more questions you have.

Well recovery is one part of being rooted. The other part is having su. su gives you root permission so that you can have access to the system partition........most custom roms have it cooked in. If you are still on stock then you will not be fully rooted until you flash the su file......

Mikg is a great rim to start out.......but that is up to you.......just remember to make a nandroid backup.

Yes it sounds like it's your drivers. You can update them, but I'm not sure as to which one for Windows 8. I'm on the phone, but the htc website should have the downloads somewhere.
