Help Rooting? Benefits and Proper ROM choices

Rooting: What are the advantages? Is it similar to Jail Breaking, be able to tether with other unofficial software repositories? Like Cydia for example?

So tell me a bit more, is it simply downloadng directly from the Market without paying for any app, or is there specific repositories & web Sites.

If you have not googled this already (ahem i recommend it lol) it allows you to make changes to the phone. There is no cydia, you have to "flash" stuff manually through cwm. CWM is a recovery where it allows you to flash zips that can change your software, slightly or even drasticly to another.
