I get my Hero (t-mobile G2) today, can't wait !

should I update the firmware with the latest rooted one for t-mobile ?
what benefit does rooting give me ??

There's a lot of reasons for rooting your phone, here are a couple of mine:

1. Learn hell of a lot about Linux and how your device works

2. Get features which otherwise would not be available through stock roms

3. Usually the dev's of custom roms are at the cutting edge and will release patches and features well before your network operator does (if the operators even decide to!)

4. Dev's listen to their users and implement the features that we ask for

5. Install and run apps and caches from your sd card resulting in fewer (if any 'memory low' errors

5. Run 'root' applications

6. Make your device faster and more responsive

7. Unlock and tweek 'hidden' settings and features

8. Get the latest radios

9. Use custom recovery roms

10. Look cool down the pub in front of your mates. ​

I was really hoping to root my phone and get some moto blur love to see what its like but that doesn't look like it will happen.

Are there any other ROMS out there worth running that would be better than the current HTC Hero Sense?

I believe at least one dev is/was working on this, but it's not going to happen overnight. All Android devices aren't created equally; ROMs are tailored to the hardware so a ROM from one handset has to be reworked to suit the other.

Are there any other ROMS out there worth running that would be better than the current HTC Hero Sense?

The few out there all still use SenseUI, although you can always switch it off.
