Rooting boost galaxy s2 4.1.2

After last night it's one of the best. I gotta say I need some input on stable, at least mostly functional ROMS. Most importantly something that won't cause my phone to bootloop. Any ideas

There are a lot to choose from. I happen to like the TW JB ROMs myself. Both stock and ones like jellyverse etc. When flashing any mods to your current ROM, read the op for it and make sure they aren't for deodexed only. The stock ROM will be odexed.

Should I keep the AGAT recovery. What's the best universal recovery. I've had no problems with agat bit I haven't really flashed anything either. So what's the most supported or recommended? Clockworkmod or TW or one I don't know about

There isn't universal recovery unfortunately. Unlike other Samsung phones, the recovery is tied to the kernel. The one you have for GC01 is the one you need to have for it. When Samsung updated to JB the partition info changed some, and other older recoveries won't backup properly to allow you to restore. If you change over to an AOSP ROM like CM10 etc, then you would have a different kernel and recovery. That is why I said to keep a copy of this recovery kernel handy. You would need to flash it in and boot into its recovery to restore if returning to the ROM you have now. Another thing to note, only Touch Wiz Jelly Bean ROMs will work with the JB Modems, all other AOSP ROMs including JB ones will use an ICS modem (FL24).

Okay that is definitely info I needed. So basically I need to keep the .zip file listed with the .tar file on that link you gave me yesterday on my sd card just in case, not the .tar file I put in the pda box in odin. Or is it the .tar file? I ask that because I didn't flash the .Zip file yesterday when I did the process, I only flashed the .tar file. So kernels and recoveries are tied together on this device. And the agat kernel I'm using now is compatible with any touchwiz jellybean ROM? And to flash a AOSP ROM like cm10 or AOKP magical unicorn I need a fl24 recovery? Do most ROMS state what recovery is needed? I imagine it's not hard to find fl24 kernels+recoveries? Also can i flash "insert recovery here" while inside my current recovery or do i need to do something special to flash another recovery?

Keep both files. you can flash the zip from another recovery to get back to that one. The tar will be useful if you don't have a recovery so you can Odin it in. Mobile Odin also works with tar files to flash from the phone (just don't do modems with mobile Odin)

I have Boost mobile s2 with 4.1.2 update. I thought I did everything right. Flashed agat 0.6.8. Phone will not boot, but I can get into recovery mode. How do I recover!

You used the wrong kernel for Jelly Bean. Agat 0.6.8 is for ICS

use the kernel from here:

[KERNEL][JB][SOURCE][BST] GC01 + Agat's Recovery

Take your time and do read the current posts attached to the thread for things. It will save you trouble in the future. (post #3 of this very thread I posted the link to this kernel before)

Thanks. How do I transfer the .tar file to the phone since I can't boot to transfer via windows? Can I transfer via Download mode (odin, volume down) boot mode?

Sorry, stupid question. I was thinking about superuser. Since I was obiously looking at an old thread when I followed the instructions, I wonder if I have the lastest version of superuser

Hello everyone. I have the boost mobile Samsung galaxy s2. I had it rooted once before but desisted to unroot to up date to 4.1.2 JB and left it unrooted for a bit but now I would like to re root it and install a custom rom. My question is could anyone point me in to the page to re root my phone with the 4.1.2 JB and custom rom. Thanks in advance.

You can root it by following the rooting guide just download the tar file of this kernel for jellybean instead of the one linked in the guide.

[UPDATE][KERNEL][SOURCE] JB GB27 v1.4.2 with AGAT tREC_v0.3.5 recovery 08/14/13 - xda-developers

You will then be rooted with recovery. After that pick your custom ROM and follow the instructions in the ROMs OP...

Alternatively you can use the framaroot app, get mobile Odin from the play store, and use that to install the tar file for the kernel linked above.

So download this Kernel link:
v1.4.2
Some clean up. Fixing lock ups and freezes.
AGAT_GB27_v1.4.2F.tar

then use the root guide and I will be rooted with custom recovery??? Also could you tell me where to get a good rom and how to flash it????

Yes use that kernel with the rooting guide instructions and you will root your phone, or do it with framaroot and use mobile odin to install that kernel.

Check out Projext X (just look it up in this forum) and follow the Op's instructions. It is a very popular custom ROM.

Ok this is for boost mobile 4.1.2 Jelly bean cause the tar says GB27??? and will I loose anything from my phone like Apps or so??

You are going to have to get used to the idea that practically all custom ROMs are done for the Sprint side. Most don't contain any of the bloat apps, especially not Boost bloat. You will need to know your MSL to change your MMS server settings so MMS messages will work. A Sprint labeled ROM will work on a Boost phone just fine since Boost runs on Sprint anyway.

If any of that bugs you, then I say just go with rooted stock and just add in some custom things like xposed framework stuff etc..

Hello guys. I am rooted but do not have a custom recovery and would like to install a custom recovery to be able to use setcpu to over clock. Can someone tell me where I could get a up dated GC01 custom recovery tar to flash in mobile odin. Also if anyone knows what flash kernel I need to download for mobile odin that would help to. Thanks in advance.

Again Shaun, this is the kernel you need! If you do not wish to wish to purchase Mobile Odin pro from the play store then use PC odin or the one click from this Post. Quit looking for some GC01 custom recovery kernel, THIS IS THE ONE THAT YOU NEED.

This IS the kernel for the ability to overclock on your stock rooted Jelly Bean ROM for no matter with variant you have. Sprint (GB27), Virgin (GB28), and Boost (GC01) variants will all use this kernel.
