Root Rooting Captivate Froyo Update

Can someone give me or point me to the instructions on how to navigate the first few steps of the ABD version. I have the SDK and I'm still a little behind on the terminology. Too many acronyms.
What exactly do I need to do to browse to the contents of the zip folder from the terminal screen that pops up when I open the SDK.
Maybe I shouldn't be doing these things if I don't know, but I want to do them anyway :)
I rooted my Captivate just to put Froyo on it and now that I've gotten accustomed to superuser access I want it back.

Thank You

Clay MF Sims

ADB method was very easy ... all you have to do is cut and paste ... voila ... :-D

Its not really easy with Windows 7. I gave up trying with that SDK ADB SHABADABA stuff lol. Please, Fix this zip so I can get the one click lag fix workin again! hahaha

really? I'm using Win7 x64 and it all went without a hitch. All of the SDK ADB commands can be copied one line at a time and pasted into the win7 CMD window.

Working on it.....I'm talking to a friend of mines, we're trying to see what's up. There's a reason why there isn't one just yet......even across the forums, weird huh.

There will be an "update.zip" I assure you. Just got in from church, going to work some more now....I appreciate the patience everyone....

Not a programmer but why couldn't you unzip and copy into new folder with same name so its not zipped?

It's not that easy. Normally with a package like this.... it has to be signed. Signed meaning sealed in a way, so that the Android OS can read it. For some reason it's not signing properly. I've used two different scripting programs that'll sign it for me, one I just decided to try and am currently testing.

If a zip package is compiled or edited, it still has to be signed or resigned, or you'll get the message everyone has been getting. It's compiled right....I'm confident of that, it's just the signature part of it.....thats my hurdle right now....

I tried this and maybe I'm just CMD ******ed but I have no idea how to navigate to the files, AND whaddaya know, control V doesn't work in the CMD window.

WARNING: there may be some n00b bombs above. Feel free to kick me a bit for any stupidity.

Instead of ctrl-v just right-click in the cmd window and select Paste

Clay ... I will give it a try to explain. Please excuse me if I am too basic ...

When you unzip the downloaded Captivate2.2RootPack it extracts the following files:

busybox
rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
sqlite3
su
Superuser.apk

Using the windows GUI, drag and drop those files under the "tools" directory created by the SDK installation.
(When you installed the SDK it created "add-ons", "platforms" and "tools" directories under where you installed the SDK.)

The path to the "tools" directory *will vary depending on how your computer was set up and where you installed SDK*.
You can see the path in windows explorer when you are in the "tools" directory displayed at the top of the windows explorer
window. If win 7, click on the yellow folder at the top of the window.
For example, my installed path is: C:\Users\Dennis\Desktop\android\android-sdk-windows\tools

Then launch cmd.exe by going to the windows START button and typing cmd.exe into the bar at the bottom.

type: cd /
type cd Users\Dennis\Desktop\android\android-sdk-windows\tools (the first part of this will be different on each PC)
Leave the CMD (DOS) window open.

Now you can copy each command one line at a time in the instructions at the top of this thread using your mouse and left click and hold to drag over it, highlighting it, and release and then right click to copy it.

Next you can paste that copied command into the CMD window by putting your mouse pointer in the CMD window and right click to paste it. hit the enter key to execute the command.

Repeat one line at a time till you complete all the steps.

You are the best!! This was just what I needed. I'll let you know how it goes!!

I believe the reason it can't be wigned is because it is a BETA release. It is probably not finished and is for testing purposes. We only have it because someone intentionally leaked it to the person on XDA that has been pushing out updates and fixes for months.

In a way.....frustratingly and unfortunately, I agree with what you're saying, which sucks!!! I've been working on it, but everything seems set up right....so it must be the fact that it is BETA.

What confuses me is that if you do this manually, you're basically doing what the "update.zip" would do. I don't quite understand because, Cognition's ROM flashes, DG has a ROM based off of 2.2 JI6 build....weird and confusing.....oh yeah......frustrating to

The latest build actually started to flash, but got stuck again with the same errors....I made some progress. There's got to be a way around this.....Well Im calling it a night.....going to see some important people about two jobs in the morning....pray for me guys

Keep on it bud, Im sure you will eventually get it. Ill tell you man, with this flashing to froyo my battery as been dyiing a LOT faster now. I dont know what it is. The phone lagged up really bad the other day and I had to do a couple reboots. Im actually thinking of going back to stock with everything because its driving me nuts.

Leaks will do those things. Leaks are still in BETA. Samsung is just looking for feedbacks through what's wrong, just by looking through these forums. But I don't blame you if you go back.....This update.zip should work there if you decide to.

One more question, the phone, during the command line process, I take it should be plugged in but should it be on, off, download mode, etc?

Clay, before connecting the cable to the phone, the phone is turned on (fully booted up) with USB Debugging turned on (Menu/Applications/Development/USB Debugging)

I tried this second method last night, but right after I execute this command: ./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
the phone or the USB beeps and after a few moments when I try to run the next instruction, I get an error about "device does not exist" or something...
Also, ever since I upgraded to froyo, my phone's been lagging a lot. I've even done the master erase and reset factory settings, but no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

I deleted a bunch of widgets for the time being. Froyo is running better for the matter. Any idea on the update file yet?

I'm compiling a ROM ladies and gents. This "update.zip" rooting package is pretty time consuming, trying to get it right. I'm compiling a ROM based off of the JI6 Froyo leak....similar to Cognition. I'll be removing the AT&T stuff and so on. Root will be available, busybox as well. I'll keep it pretty basic, not doing to much until the official Froyo release is made....hopefully the end of this month.

I'll be bringing themes to Android, including the Vanilla Android everyone has been wanting for so long...Unlike DG's Cognition, my ROM will be deodexed, which makes theming much more easier and painless. The stock JI6 kernel will also be implemented. I'll continue working on a "update.zip" root package, but I'll be working on this ROM. I just finished deodexing most files, I have a few that want to be stubborn lol.

Expect some great things ladies/gents, not only from me, but from other devs as well....Just giving everyone a heads up in what to expect over the next month or so. I'll probably release it after Koush gets Clockworkmod Recovery updated to Froyo compatibility for the Captivate.

I need some ideas on names for my ROM. Something I can carry across platforms, into later phones and so on. So far "Essence" is where I'm at, but if anyone has any great names please feel free to vent.....the more ideas, the better.

Oh and one more thing....I'll need some BETA testers....some permanent ones....please have a little experience in Android....at least being able to understand some of the code....I'll keep everyone posted....

I NEED SOME NAMES!!!!
